The New York Times has an interesting piece on Sally Hershberger. Hershberger is the New York based hairstylist that charges $600 to get your hair trimmed. While many will look at this eye popping figure and say she can’t be that good, apparently she is. The article alludes to the fact that her rise to stardom began with the shag cut she gave Meg Ryan for the 1995 flick “French Kiss.”
I’ve never gone to her for a cut, but that would probably require me having $600 spare dollars lying around, a sense of adventure and the wherewithall to be on some celebrity list. Seeing as how I am striking out on all fronts except the adventure part, I doubt she will be seeing me soon. I also doubt that she cares, about seeing me soon that is.
The jist of the article though is about her new forays into stuff other than struttin’ n’ cuttin’. sorry. Hershberger is planning on launching a denim line with product ranging in price between $170 and $240, a skincare line, and other ventures. Player haters are doubting whether she will succeed, but I figure if you can cut people’s hair for $600, then anything else is child’s play.

Coke kills…your career
Kate Moss is lucky she’s not a politician. Her truth telling ways has done a number on her career. First H&M had her back. Then it got a little hot so H&M backed off. Burberry didn’t second guess their position, they just dropped her. Coco Chanel roled over in her grave twice and turned her back on Moss. All she had to do was say that it wasn’t her on camera doing lines in a studio. R. Kelly got away with it…multiple times.
And now we hear that the Church of Scientology has chimed in to help alleviate her pocketbo..problem.
The thing I don’t get is why celebrities always manage to screw up…bad. From Hugh Grant, to the aformentioned R. Kelly to Kate Moss. Someone should write a celebrity handbook on not screwing up.
In said handbook would be a laundry list of things not to do. For example:
1. Never videotape yourself having sex with anyone…ever (see Rob Lowe, Jamie Fox, R. Kelly, Pamela Anderson, Paris Hilton etc)
2. Never do lines of coke in front of anyone… (see Kate Moss. etc)
3. Never have sex with someone unless they can say yes on camera, audiotape, etc and sign a notarized waiver saying it is all consensual. If you really want to cover your hide, make sure another party is present before you engage in the act. (see Mike Tyson, Kobe Bryant)
4. Never attempt to have your pregnant baby mutha killed. Especially if you are a football player and play for the Cowboys or the Ravens. (See Rae Carruth)
5. Never have your baby mutha killed over dinner then say (in your defense, as a location alibi) that you left as she was getting killed because you forgot your gun somewhere.
6. Never call a co-worker when you are drunk to proposition the co-worker for sex. And if you do decide to call the co-worker (or anyone) for that matter, don’t leave a message on the answering machine.
7. Never show up late for court.
8. Never proposition a child with Jesus Juice
9. Never sleep with the nanny.
10. Never escape in a Ford Bronco…anywhere.

LFW: The Wrapup
So I was a little late with the wrapup. I really wasn’t sure what to write. That’s basically the general feeling behind London fashion week. Yes there were a lot of shows I said that I liked. There were hits and misses (more the latter than the former). London Fashion week seemed really to be fashion week NYC part deux. I will be looking in earnest to Milan and hoping the results are not the same.
Best Show: Paul Smith
In my opinion, the best show was the show I didn’t attend. That is my luck. I saw the pictures coming out from the show, and unless something is completely and totally off in translation between seeing it live and seeing the pictures, Paul Smith did it for me.
Worst Show: Betty Jackson
I will catch flack. But I just didn’t like this show. I didn’t get the direction. I didn’t like the designs, they seemed like a retread. It was as if the designs were put together from composite parts of spring shows gone by. I wanted to get the time wasted here back. Where’s Marty McFly and his Delorean when you need it?
Honorable Mention: Eley Kishimoto
I liked the designs. The colors were vivid, vibrant and the designs were different. Yes there were some weird, funky pieces, but that’s what makes fashion, fashion. Someone get Richie Rich and Traver Rains on the phone. Unconventional works well when done correctly and Kishimoto did it perfectly.
Overall, it’s not that London fashion week was bad per se’, it’s that the innovation, the creativity seemed to be toned down. Can’t wait for the fall show. If i’m invited…

LFW: Paul Smith

I didn’t attend this show, but from the photos coming out, I really like the direction. Paul Smith, it seems by tradition has always understood what makes a woman sexy. It’s the lines, the ability to show without giving it all away. A lot designers revel in showing what you may not want to show. This collection, plunging necklines and all, seemed to keep all the body parts where they needed to be, yet at the same time maintained a sexiness not found in other lines. It’s the difference between being overt and understated. Other items in the collections seemed playful yet grown up. The English influence is definitely there. I didn’t get the feeling of the vibrant pastellish spring that has been making the rounds this week, but that’s not a bad thing . For the most part the colors were subduded which drew attention more to the actual design at play. I’m somewhat upset that I didn’t go to this show as it probably would have been my favorite.
My wrap-up comes later tonight.

LFW: John Rocha

One word: Elegant. Every single piece was simply elegant. You can tell as we near the end of London Fashion week, things are starting to pick up. The John Rocha show was very… well… elegant. That alone is great seeing as how I am a sucker for class. There wasn’t an explosion of colors like in in the Kishimoto show. As an example, the sheer red top in the picture above is simple, understated, yet draws attention, because it is so well done. And I’m not talking steak. The Rocha show had a lot of flowing pieces and loose dresses and tops. It was relaxed and harkened back ever so slightly to the 20s.
Not a bad effort. I didn’t go to the Paul Smith show, but I received some photos from the LFW people and may write a commentary on his women’s line . Be back tomorrow with some more views and a wrap up.
