Went to see an interesting exhibit a couple of days ago at FIT called Dutch at the edge of Design. It’s an amalgam of fashion and textiles from the Netherlands. It features designs from Viktor & Rolf, Marcel Wanders, Nicolette Brunklaus and many others. The exhibit vaguely notes that Dutch designers are unlike their European and American counterparts in that they rarely conform to “traditional” market demands and refrain from commercialism. The exhibit features 75 examples of Dutch fashion spread over 30 designers. It’s definitely a different look at fashion. You can see the European influence but definitely not the same old, same old from the London-Milan-Paris crowd.
