LAFW: Good Bye LA, Hello Grandma
Send to a friend:
This week has been a blast. I didn’t see as much as in NY, but overall I would say LA Fashion Week was a success. The last show I went to see before flying back to NY was the St. John show. I was a little hesitant to go at first. Last year one of my grandmothers, who is probably one of my greatest fashion influences died. My grandmother always had the latest everything.
She was a public school teacher in Baltimore, and her nickname among her peers was ‘Coco Chanel’ for her impeccable style. Up until her death, she always carried with her that tradition of always dressing well. I guess it was because of the time she grew up in, when people dressed and had pride in their appearance no matter where they went. All this is to say that St. John was one of her favorite designers. I was sent to pick up many a suit, dress, or whatever from Nordstrom or Neimans when she couldn’t go. I figured that I had to go, and that she would probably be there with me. I never really cared for the St. John collections. The heavy knits, ever so sparkly buttons and attachments looked great on a grandmother, but not for me.
Well Sarah (my grandmother) will be proud because I thoroughly enjoyed this collection. They are definitely stepping up their game to attract a younger client, and I will probably be purchasing something when the collection hits the racks. Still very classic, the collection looked as though it were inspired by a little of the 40’s and a little of the 80’s. Very fun yet sophisticated evening wear and yes even the knit looked good. There was the sexy suiting, dresses and pant suits that could transfer well from the board room to everyday wear. Also on display was black evening wear, a safari khaki, and a tealish color, and of course white day wear. Some of the models rocked a fedora that would turn any woman into a fashion maven.
LA was great, there may have been more parties than fashion shows; but who doesn’t love a good party? As I sit in my cold Brooklyn apartment, I’m yearning to go back to LA once more, if not for the fashhion at least for the weather.
