JCREW at $650

Since when did JCREW start charging $650 for Cashmere jackets? Granted, I love the jacket and it is a great addition to any fall wardrobe, I just figure $650 may be a bit too steep. So I called Jcrew and asked for justification on the price. I get “materials, quality, brand… yadda, yadda, yadda. ”

The call was a goof. You can charge whatever you’d like Jcrew. Someone has to buy it.

If your wallet is deep, you can buy it here…

Shepherds

Bravo to our beauty editor Karen McIntyre and her partner Florence Buchanan. They both directed and produced a wonderful short written by Karen. The film was a touching story about a broken up couple who run into one another, and are so overwhelmed by their own emotions that their dogs have to express the feelings for them.

Most times when I see a short it’s like “wow if I could only get that ten minutes back.” I was actually tearing up, and a guy friend I brought with me was also touched. You could see in his face how much he missed his ex. (We all know guys hate showing emotion).

It’s showing again at the 2005 Avignon New York Film Festival. I will update again later today when I find out the actual day and time.

Bravo Yasmine Warsame, Pink Tartan

In an era where fashion tends to be all about “me.” Model Yasmine Warsame showed last week that you can be glamorous and still give.

Walking the runway for Pink Tartan during Toronto fashion week, the beautiful Warsame agreed to model designer’s wares on one condition: they would match the donation she was making to an organization that helps women and children deal with homelessness. They did, she did and the families will now receive coats, boots, hats, mittens, jeans and sweaters for the season.

Metro-7

I have nothing against Wal-Mart. If you want a cheap (low-cost) anything, Wal-Mart does well. While some people won’t admit to shopping at Wal-Mart (the cooler aesthetic is to say you shop at Target), everyone has done it at least once. It’s very hard not to considering they’ve taken over America.

Wal-Mart’s new direction in apparel though disturbs me somewhat and let me tell you why. By trying to go upscale, they seem to miss the point of going to Wal-Mart in the first place: discount shopping. While the prices for Metro 7 are still comparatively low, just makes me wonder where they are going with this line.

The knee jerk reaction of most fashion blogs/sites is to say “Wal-Mart-Metro 7- Fashion? ugh…” I have to say though it’s not all that bad…in pictures.

The jury is out on seeing the clothes in person. To be continued…

Papierdoll July 2008 Interview

Interview: Thomas Voorn
Sonia Pereira Murphy

Considering the now ubiquitous trend of disposable fashion where all that seems to matter is a cute factor, Thomas Voorn's intellectual take on clothing is not only refreshing, but enlightening. Voorn's fascination with clothing calls to mind an anthropologist intrigued with skeletal remains, a sociologist... [Go]
