Hip but Classic Alternatives: Turtlenecks

Instead of Wearing This…

The thin, tight-necked, ribbed turtleneck is a bit outdated, and pretty conservative to be worn by anyone besides a businesswoman in an office with a strict dress code (they are appropriate to be worn under a suit on a cold day, and one of the few options available to do so).
…Wear One of These

Simple variations can make such a difference. The smooth and slightly thickened texture of the dark purple cashmere turtleneck by Christopher Fischer (left) somehow makes it dressy and casual at the same time. The James Pearse jersey cowl turtleneck (right) is so light that it could be worn under a suit or blazer or on its own.

The ribbed trim on the neck, wrists and waist of the asymmetrical turtleneck sweater from Victoria’s Secret (left) ensures its long-lasting style, while not a “proper†turtleneck, the unbuttoned slit neck provides the same visual effect. Sweaters are progressively becoming chunkier and lengthier every winter, and turtlenecks are no exception, as this Katya Cashmere turtleneck from Theory (right) demonstrates. Again, it is accented by ribbed banding at the neck, wrists and waists, adding figure-forming structure to the thick and lengthy texture.

This Mac and Jack Cowl Neck Sweater (left) combines cable knit, cashmere, cowl neck and a broach to create a chic and unique look. The pinched neck provides definition to the fabric draping around the shoulders. And for a review of the Ya-Ya cashmere cowl neck sweater (right), check out ThriftyChick’s “Today’s Pickâ€.
