Does the best style come from the mainstream stylish?

Tenisha Sunday, February 5th, 2006 | Vintageista

I have asked this question of myself time and time again. However, I really pondered this question these past weeks in watching the award shows and tapping into my guilty pleasure of watching TV reality shows. This applies in particular to Project Runway, Style Me, and The Stylist (yeah this one is on the TV Guide network). My answer to this question is a resounding HELL NO! I say this not because I love the underdog, or I’m tired of the same celebs or trends taking center stage for the “Best Style” award, but for the simple fact that there really are some laid back Larry’s and low key Lucy’s (aka Maggie Gyllenhaal, Derek Luke, Reese Witherspoon, etc.) that are just style and fashion forward as the typical tabloidies. And surprise, surprise! They are not the next JLO, Sienna Miller, Usher, or Beyonce, and they don’t even try to be. Not that there is anything wrong with these celebs, but isn’t it time to embrace more individualism as oppose to a brand? I’m not here to persuade you to think how I am thinking, but to think what you are thinking…outside the box. We all are capable of it. What do you think or not think?

Couldn’t agree more. Over the last 5 or 6 years, I’ve noticed a disturbing pattern where everyone is turning into a clone of some ’style ideal’ of mysterious origins that is destroying individuality –and what goes along with it: personality. We’re moving toward homogeneity and it’s scary. For example, watching the Oscars and the Golden Globes is like watching a freaking political convention. Nobody says anything original or controversial, nobody wears anything unique. Everybody has a fake smile plastered to a botoxed face, wearing a loaned designer dress and borrowed jewellery, all put together by some stylist or branding director somewhere in the background. I love people like Kirsten Dunst who will (gasp!) wear the same shoes twice on the red carpet, and Bjork, who will wear something because it’s a gorgeous work of art.

Hey Tenisha,

I spotted on one of your earlier blogs that you worked for EFF. That’s something that I’m VERY interested in doing myself and I was just wondering how you went about getting that position and how it ultimately went. I love your blog and think it’s very witty and informative. Keep it up!

P

PS. Did you ever decide about going to school in London?

Fashion is haunted by trends of seasons past. Normally you’ll find yourself wincing at old photos from an earlier decade when shoulder pads were in. Bell bottoms are now the thing as illustrated by our retro article this month.... [Go]
