NYC Fall Fashion Week: Michael Kors
I am going to reprint the front page of Michael Kors’ program it its entirety, because it is so well done:
“Love stories… a blend of the romantic elegance of Gatsby mixed with the collegiate chic of The Graduate and Love Story… sportswear juxtaposition… lean with oversized, short versus long… reconfiguring the classics with a twist of proportion and texture… the subtle chic of navy and charcoal played off black… autumnal shades of loden, cordovan, ebony and camel… bold stripes and blanket plaid’s, haberdashery paisley’s and foulard’s with a modern edge… couture velvets, brocades and lace with an easy attitude,,, an opaque leg paired with a gusty brogue, kiltie or boot balances the silhouette… opposites attract with a charming wristlet or oversized hobo… soft hair and glowing skin… love American style.
-Michael Kors Fall 2006â€Â
This meandering stream of consciousness guide to Kors’ collection captures the essence of the 72 designs that came down dueling runways as one cohesive collection. Kors blended smart Brit, American Ivy League and a touch of the twenties for a modern reinterpretation of collegiate chic. The opening chords of “Give a Little Bit of Your Love to Me†would segue into the next melody in a series of lighthearted love songs, ending with the trumpet blare of “All You Need is Love,†creating a perfect setting for Kors’ casual chic presentation.
This collection was undeniably Michael Kors, something that can not be said for several runway shows and their designers that we’ve seen this week. The color palette stayed true to Kors muted, natural tones, and Kors’ signature style of effortless chic remained in control of the designs. While the British and collegiate influences were apparent in the collection, Kors remained the dictator of his work instead of allowing the concept to overshadow his own signature style (as several other designers have done).
Rugby stripes, plaid, argyle, tweed, paisley and brocade all made a strong showing in the collection, the belts were low-waisted instead of high, and the lovely assortment of knit caps are sure to be warming every cool noggin’ come next autumn.

[...] As a separate post from the actual Michael Kors show post (since that deserves undivided attention), I thought I would provide some dish on the front-row celebrities that I observed before and during the show. [...]
