Archive for February, 2006

I think Fall Fashion week is perhaps my favorite season for shows. The cooler weather causes designers to create in layers. With the Spring/Summer shows, a designer tends to think minimalism. For the fall, designers pull out all the stops. You’ll have a mish-mash of coats, sweaters, shawls, boots, handbags, tops, dresses I can go on and on.
Last year, being new, we had trouble getting into shows we loved.
This year, it’s about finding the time for two people (and our photographer) to attend all the shows to which we’ve been invited. The shows don’t just end in New York. Meryl Demiglio is back for Paris (and we hear Milan).
So enjoy our coverage in the coming days of all the shows we love.
*The promotional e-mail digests may go on hiatus as we cover the spectacle that is fashion week.

The Missed Valentine
With the dreaded day slowly creeping up on us, we decided to express our feelings in photograph. The new Look photogallery entitled “The Missed Valentine” definitely touches on the subject. Take a look.

Fashion Bore
After watching Bravo’s Project Runway, I flipped through the channels and stumbled upon Rachel Hunter’s Style Me. (A show where people compete to be a stylist for Rachel Hunter- who thought of that?) Style Me reminded me of Hilfiger’s very low rated designer show where his tag line was, “You’re out of style - Hit the runway-” UGHHHHHHH!!!! It seems to me that fashion just isn’t special anymore. Everyone and anyone can have a fashion line. Retail experiences and services are quite terrible even at some of the most high end department stores and boutiques.
I was intrigued with fashion as a child because it was more of an art form to me. The elaborate fashion shows were like mobile museums and the models were like canvases. The models and shows now seem to be replaced by red carpets and actresses, and it feels like the art is gone. Even New York, where I used to visit simply to see different looks and find inspiration, has turned into a place full of fashion clones, victims, and knock-offs.
Everyone (Papierdoll included) has a fashion blog, a t-shirt line, wants to be a designer or stylist. With fashion week starting tomorrow, I hope that we can all embrace the beauty that is the runway show- let’s forget about who is sitting in the front row - and bask in our favorite designer’s art.

Papierdoll July 2008 Interview
Interview: Thomas Voorn
Sonia Pereira Murphy
Considering the now ubiquitous trend of disposable fashion where all that seems to matter is a cute factor, Thomas Voorn's intellectual take on clothing is not only refreshing, but enlightening. Voorn's fascination with clothing calls to mind an anthropologist intrigued with skeletal remains, a sociologist... [Go]
