In this review of the SAG awards, I am not going to make “best” and “worst” dressed lists, because style is about individual taste, and thus I cannot dictate other people’s outfits in such superlatives.

Haha, yeah right.

Despite personal taste, some things are just obvious (but feel free to disagree in comments). Still, this is not a dog show, so I won’t treat it like a “best in show” contest.

SAG’s Most Stylish

Sandra Bullock’s dress is understated elegance: the length and simple silhouette make it understated, while the ethereal fabric, the sequined trim that defines the empire bustline, and the ballooned hem provide elegance. Shoes and purse match the dress’ trim. Nicely done.

Finally, Hilary Swank has chosen a dress that highlights her amazing body rather than detracting from it. She looks stunning and the ripples of the bowed dress complement her curvy, muscular shoulders and arms.

Ellen Pompeo looked regal in this simple but chic gown. The subtle satin crisscross at the waist and the fitted bust give the dress character without overpowering the sleek look.

Ziyi Zhang’s dress reflects the Japanese sophistication of the movie she was nominated for (Memoirs of a Geisha), but also modernizes the traditional Asian gown. While the dress is not a kimono, the sewn detail provokes the rich scenes often characteristic of kimono, and the softer, airy, layered look is ultra feminine. And above all, the color scheme is simply breathtaking.

Mariska Hartigay’s dress was beautiful and perfect to show off her pregnant belly with taste, but it is her glowing smile that makes her so radiant. Mariska proves that style comes from within.

SAG’s Least Stylish

Eva is so petite – why would she wear something that overpowers and complicates her tiny upper half? The construction of the top flattens Eva and distracts from her gorgeous curves. Plus, it just looks a little granny-like.

I love Reese Witherspoon, but I hate this dress. It looks like muslin or linen, and falls limply across her body rather that hugging her figure, as the black banding would suggest. I know her last dress was a recycled Kirsten Dunst piece, but it was much better than this.

Besides just being sorta plain, Nicollete Sheridan’s dress looks like it could use an iron. I am sure the fabric is purposefully crinkled, but honestly, it would have looked better if it were sleek. The color is what makes this dress truly unappealing – the aqua stripes should have been paired with a more subtle (i.e. NOT LIME GREEN) color.

Britney Spears actually wore a choker. I don’t think I’ve even seen a choker since the mid nineties. Her dress looks like a home-sewn homecoming dress where mom got too excited, went overboard and couldn’t figure out how to construct a fitted bust with the cheap fabric.

The One Undecided

I don’t know how I feel about Terri Hatcher’s dress. The color is gorgeous. I love the top, though it puffs out slightly too much. I do not like the visual affect of the black waistband, but do like how it defined the waist – perhaps it would be better in a color just a few shades darker than the dress. I am not sure about the lower half: I love the train, and I even like the ruched front, but perhaps it seems like I am staring at what should be the back, rather than the front of the dress. Something about the dress is so incongruous, but at the same time, I am inexplicably drawn to it. the parts are better than the whole.
