    Milan Fashion Week: Prada

Before Miuccia Prada took over her grandfather’s luxury leather goods company, she earned a PhD in political science. This biographical tidbit informs Prada’s Fall 2006 collection: the models walked briskly down the runway with books in hand, unfinished hair, and makeup that made them resemble the walking dead – all evoking the image of a purposeful student rushing to class after pulling an all-nighter writing the eigthteenth chapter of her dissertation.

The look was composed of an unfussy monochromatic palette and baggy clothing, fitting the needs of the serious grad student who refuses having to be bothered with coordinating her wardrobe (because she has other things on her mind), and who demands comfortable, easy to wear clothing (but whose stylistic refinement wholly rejects sweatpants).

    Collection Highlights

The bubbled jackets and skirts creates a voluminous form that presents the impression that the look is intentionally unkempt rather than unintentionally frumpy. Cinched waists (such a fall runway cliché by now) further indicate that the wearer is deliberate in creating a polished style.

One of the most interesting features of the collection were the belts that held jackets at the waist. This reinterprets the era (circa 1990) when tying a sweatshirt or jacket around your hips was acceptable by bestowing the bygone look with a posh panache. Layering corsets over clothing indicates that being a serious thinker doesn’t preclude sex appeal, but actually exposes it.

The only prints in Prada’s collection were animal prints – Miuccia couldn’t resist.

While the designs were a successful execution of the collection’s concept, their wearability is another issue altogether. Prada’s customers probably want something more sleek and graceful. There is a definite rumpled presence in the collection, which loses its meaning when separated from the runway. The outfits may actually look more flattering on regular body types, as the bulkiness of some pieces overpowered the thin frames of the models.

Raiding the Virtual Sales Racks at Nordstrom.com

The winter sales are entering their final stages, and that means two things: 1) deep discounts and 2) the last chance to stock up for next fall (I know it’s hard to think that far ahead, but imagine how much you will look forward to the return of the cold weather with a gorgeous jacket hanging in your closet).

Nordstrom’s final sale has some amazing finds from some great designers. Here are my picks from the sale:

Diane von Furstenberg Telsey Skirt: $96.90 from $325.00
(Read the review on ThriftyChick’s “Today’s Pick”)

    L.A.M.B. Pleated Tweed Blazer: $254.90 from $425.00

Custo Barcelona Perk Sleeveless Top: $45.90
    from $116.00

    Nanette Lepore Bedazzled Jacket: $146.90
    from $245.00

    Joie Plaid Jacket : $78.90 from $265.00

Kendra Scott Bamboo Bangles: $48.90 from $98.00

Nordstrom Hand Knit Tulip Cardigan: $37.90 from $128.00
(it doesn’t need to be designer to be a great find)

Milan Fashion Week: The Clothing is Wearing the Models

Are the models too thin, or the clothing too bulky?

Either way, it looks like the fall frocks in Milan are swallowing the models. The bloated python look probably won’t catch on… we just won’t stomach it.

    Prada, Marni, and Prada.

Style Prophet: Canadian Designer Leads Fashion's Future
    Stephanie Nolasco

At the age of fourteen, Lacy Barry was given a religious premonition of her future with fashion. The word "ephoe," a plural form of the eight ritual garments worn by Jewish high priests, appeared in her dream. Barry, age 24, is the founder of Ephoe Inc., a label whose influences come from lush tropical colors, Audrey Hepburn and Victorian couture... [Go]
