LA Fall 2006 Fashion Week: YA-YA
A while ago I wrote about my new Ya-Ya obsession. After much (personal) anticipation, Yael Aflalo showed her Fall 2006 line for Ya-Ya yesterday, and it exceeded all my expectations. Staying true to the “relaxed chic†of the Ya-Ya spirit, Yael built upon the strengths of the brand while continuing to carve out its own distinctive signature style.
Ya-Ya’s fall line continued its tradition of incorporating extreme lengths into a loose, easy fit–a concept embodied in these floor-sweeping sweater coats. Despite their length and large sleeves, the sweaters aren’t bulky and don’t overpower the clothing underneath (assisted by the fold over collar).
Even leather flows loosely in Yael’s hands. The fitted top of the dress at left counterposes the fluttering skirt for a look that retains some punk rock edge but with a softened balance. The dress at right is loose and sexy—though a bit uninventive in its rather standard cut—but the buckled belt accentuates the waist and gives form of the loose fit (and further demonstrates that the cinched waists of spring will continue to the fall).
These are my two favorite outfits from the show – Ya-Ya’s sweaters are the best demonstration of the designer’s talents. The plunging necklines, lightweight fabric, and flattering cut makes what could have been frumpy or dowdy into a shape that is fitted and sexy. This cropped sweater and skirt (left) create a sleek, modern look, and the sweater dress (right) defies its traditional cable knit and elongated length for an unconventionally sensual frock.
