What About The Guys?

Everyone was talking about the Oscar dresses, but what about the Hollywood Men? Who channeled their in Cary Grant and who marched like a penguin?

Eric Bana and George Clooney remind me of the actors of yesterday opting for the classic tux.

Terrence Howard chose a tie, but the million dollars worth of diamonds set it off. I’m not into a lot of “bling”, but he pulls it off. I could however do without the man purse. (Guess he channeled his inner Joey).

Can you believe the guy who “sharted” won Best Actor? Well he did take something away from his role as Truman Capote- a new since of style.

These guys really ran (and won) with the penguin theme

Big guy, little tie

Great suit -for someone maybe a little taller, the pointy lapels seem to be in, but the points make Ludacris kind of look like a mini Dracula.

Enough with the colored shirts, I know he’s playing Tubbs in the upcoming Miami Vice, but please can someone send him a white shirt?

Columbian drug lord, Or J.LO’s husband?

We now know where Tim Burton’s inspiration for his creepy characters comes from-him.

The picture says it all- nice mouth jewelry. :(

Carnivale of Couture - Film and Fashion

The current Carnivale of the Couture topic, brought to us by Counterfeitchic is film and fashion. The topic is kind of vague, but that just leaves plenty of room for interpretation. A lot of people are posting about Oscar Fashion, but we already have a post about that and I’m feeling a little more ambitious. (Watch out! That’s never good.)

I find the increasingly close ties between film and fashion more than a little bit disturbing. When you look at Nicole Kidman in a Chanel gown you think “Yes, that is right. This woman was BORN to wear Chanel and Chanel was created to be worn by her.” It just seems like a perfect match. But, the whole publicity craze has now resulted in, say, Lindsay Lohan wearing a Chanel gown. It doesn’t seem to fit quite as well.

Now, I’m not knocking the actual fit of her gowns - or even saying she didn’t look great in them. (Okay, maybe I’m saying that a little bit about some of them.) I’m just saying that popular chache among teeny-boppers and club-goers does not a style icon make. But if you’re a popular celebrity, whether a serious actress or a media whoring heiress (no names, no names) you seem to have the same access to the hautest of couture. It doesn’t seem right.

Lindsay Lohan in Chanel

Even more disturbing is the fact that it’s completely understandable and defendable from a retail standpoint. Of course these designers are going to throw their clothes onto any celebrity maniquin who will wear them, because the next day they will sell out of that dress. I mean, it’s all marketting, and that’s just the way the world of commerce works. I just expect a little bit more from the world of art - of which fashion portends to be a part.

It’s also kind of unrealistic and counter to the craft of both fashion and acting when characters in movies wear ridiculously expensive designer clothes that their Character could never afford and would never have heard of. If your Character would shop at KMart - break out the Jaclyn Smith.

So, I guess to make up for my extra frivolous answer to the Carnivale of the Couture question on how you’d spend 10 million, I’m getting all philosophical and arty on this one.

To quote another fashion maven of the silver screen, Cher Horowitz, “way existential.”

Credit vs Debit

While sometimes I find that MSN is a black hole of information, it occasionally has its moments. Take for instance the whole debit vs credit argument. At times when you are shopping for your favorite pair of heels (have to work fashion somehow in this post), you will find the salesperson asking whether you want to use your card as a debit or a credit. There are definitely advantages on one versus the other.

With credit you get the protection of the issuing company. So if something goes wrong (as they often do) you are protected. The drawback is that if something goes wrong with the purchase, let’s say the size is too big (I wish) when you return it, you will usually have to wait a couple of days to have the money returned to you.

The flip side is buying with debit.

Buying with debit doesn’t give you the same level of protection you would get say with a credit card. Getting your money back is a little harder, especially for fraud on big ticket items. But it is a lot easier if you’re just going to a store and returning an item. In that scenario you get your money back immediately. Hence one of the advantages.

A major disadvantage (depending on your point of view) is that you always incur a bank charge when you purchase with debit. Bank charges range from $1.50 to $2.00 per transaction. It’s the same thing as using an ATM from a bank other than your home bank. To make matters worse, not only do you get a bank charge from the store’s bank, your bank may add a service charge for the transaction. So instead of just a $2.00 fee for purchasing those super popular ballet flats at that $10 deal price, you get a $5.00 fee on top of the original price and tax. Doesn’t sound like a deal does it?

Live from the Oscars

Photographer Ollie Smith tried not to get start struck, but as we spoke on the phone he said to me, “dude I was a couple of feet away from Salma frickin Hayek.” Indeed.

He took some shots at the Oscars for his magazine (which will go unnamed) and sent us some that went unused. Friends are a great thing.

We present Oscar night in our Look gallery. Enjoy.

Spring Skin

With winter’s swan song not too far away, it’s time to get your skin ready and refreshed for the spring. All this winter we’ve been telling you to protect, protect, protect your skin. It gets dry, chapped and flaky when going against the cold wind. Thankfully this winter has not been ridiculously cold so keeping your skin soft and supple was not a painstaking thing. This spring it’s time to reward yourself with beautiful skin. One of the first places to start is Juice Beauty’s Green Apple Peel.

A couple of things to note:
1. Use this at night (especially with sensitive skin) and you will wake up with refreshed skin. It can cause redness immediately after use.

2. This is made with natural organic ingredients so it will be gentle to the skin. If you have allergic reactions to any of the ingredients you definitely should not use.

3. The product will clear up a good amount of acne scars and blemishes if used correctly. See package instructions for more on use.

Papierdoll July 2008 Interview

Interview: Thomas Voorn
Sonia Pereira Murphy

Considering the now ubiquitous trend of disposable fashion where all that seems to matter is a cute factor, Thomas Voorn's intellectual take on clothing is not only refreshing, but enlightening. Voorn's fascination with clothing calls to mind an anthropologist intrigued with skeletal remains, a sociologist... [Go]
