Inquiring minds want to know …

… will I ever see my beloved discontinued lipstick shade again?

Well, the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Dawn Fallik answers your questions in her piece, “Cosmetics Loved and Lost.”

Most useful and print-and-save-worthy is the list of contact information for the “costmetic graveyards” of some of your favorite brands, as well as companies like Three Custom Color that will try to recreate your favorite.

I don’t know why so many people are attached to red lipstick, but they are - so best of luck finding or re-creating True Red.

He Designed an Icon

Oleg Cassini born Count Oleg Cassini Loiewski. He died on March 17, 2006 as a result of complications from a stroke. Cassini was born in Paris, France, raised in Italy, and moved to the United States in 1936.

He was most noted as the designer who made Jackie O the fashion icon that she is. The simple lines and luxurious fabrics, and the pill box hat defined the wardrobes of the American Woman modeling themselves after the most fashionable First Lady. He also designed for Hollywood beauties, who included Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, and Gene Tierney - to whom he was married for 11 years. He recently designed a line of wedding dresses for David’s Bridal.
His career spanned over 7 decades. He will be missed.

LA Fall 2006 Fashion Week: YA-YA

A while ago I wrote about my new Ya-Ya obsession. After much (personal) anticipation, Yael Aflalo showed her Fall 2006 line for Ya-Ya yesterday, and it exceeded all my expectations. Staying true to the “relaxed chic” of the Ya-Ya spirit, Yael built upon the strengths of the brand while continuing to carve out its own distinctive signature style.

Ya-Ya’s fall line continued its tradition of incorporating extreme lengths into a loose, easy fit–a concept embodied in these floor-sweeping sweater coats. Despite their length and large sleeves, the sweaters aren’t bulky and don’t overpower the clothing underneath (assisted by the fold over collar).

Even leather flows loosely in Yael’s hands. The fitted top of the dress at left counterposes the fluttering skirt for a look that retains some punk rock edge but with a softened balance. The dress at right is loose and sexy—though a bit uninventive in its rather standard cut—but the buckled belt accentuates the waist and gives form of the loose fit (and further demonstrates that the cinched waists of spring will continue to the fall).

These are my two favorite outfits from the show – Ya-Ya’s sweaters are the best demonstration of the designer’s talents. The plunging necklines, lightweight fabric, and flattering cut makes what could have been frumpy or dowdy into a shape that is fitted and sexy. This cropped sweater and skirt (left) create a sleek, modern look, and the sweater dress (right) defies its traditional cable knit and elongated length for an unconventionally sensual frock.

Makin’ it Look Easy: Stella McCartney for adidas

“This collection is for women who take their sport andf their style serisoylu. Why should we have to compromise one for the other?”
—Stella McCartney, on her new line of athletic wear for adidas

Stella McCartney’s athletic wear is designed for both the serious athlete and the casual gym-goer (who wants to seem like a sports maven). Wearing these outfits will make playing any sport look easy, and soon enough it will actually become easy, since you’re not going to want to take them off once they are on (motivating you to do that extra set, mile, or lap).

Tennis:

Shed the preppy look for something less formal, more functional, and every bit as chic.

Running:

Stella injects femininity into the concrete toughness of running.

Gym:

Watch your curves gradually form with each workout under these form-fitting clothes.

Swim:

Dive into modern, sleek swimwear.

And if you aren’t much of a court pounder, concrete addict, gym rat or pool shark, you can still wear the designs for causal clothing, since velour tracksuits are unequivocally out of style (how many times must we say this?).

Check out my absolute favorite item, the Run Mid Layer Jacket, featured as ThriftyChick’s Today’s Pick.

    Papierdoll July 2008 Interview

    Interview: Thomas Voorn
    Sonia Pereira Murphy

Considering the now ubiquitous trend of disposable fashion where all that seems to matter is a cute factor, Thomas Voorn's intellectual take on clothing is not only refreshing, but enlightening. Voorn's fascination with clothing calls to mind an anthropologist intrigued with skeletal remains, a sociologist... [Go]
