MediaBistro is featuring an article titled “So You Wanna Work in Fashion Editorial?” which basically says the things that anyone with common sense and a perspective on trying to break into any lucrative industry would already know: 1) understand what the job really entails, 2) get yourself out there, 3) do tasks that completely underutilize your skills for absolutely no money and if you are completely brilliant and someone happens to notice, you might get a shot.
There must be some other way to write about fashion without enslaving yourself to a system designed to keep you forever in debt and perpetually frustrated… how could one find a way to get their fashion writing out there without years of photocopying and grunt work that culminates in a 200 word squib on espadrilles? What could one possilby do to cut through all the unneccessary hazing rituals of the glossies?
Well, YOU COULD START A FASHION BLOG… of course, it still doesn’t pay, but you get to write as weighty or fluffy content as you like, on your own schedule and while sitting around bored at your regular nine-to-five (and thus still have an income). Then you’ll just be enslaved to your computer screen (hey, if it isn’t porn, might as well be fashion).
Of course, if a glossy offered me a gig, I’d still jump at the opportunity.
