Since Philo Left, We’re Obsessed with Another Chloë

Style.com has a short photo retrospective on Chloë Sevigny, with whom the Papierblog editors seem to have a current mini-obsession.

Her unique, nonstandard beauty makes her a versatile actress (from an unedited blow job scene in Brown Bunny to playing the uptight Mormon second wife on Big Love) as well as a confident, risk-taking hauterfly.

While she has been a long-standing darling of the fashion industry, she is finally getting some pop culture exposure, which would normally alarm us if we weren’t so confident that she will maintain her avant-garde edge.

Related: One Papierblog writer encounters Ms. Sevigny (Chloe Sevigny at Reserve), while another identifies with her current character (Sans Mascara, I’m a Fundamental Mormon Polygamist).

Fash Rehash: The End of the World as We Know It

This is Papierblog’s first edition of Fash Rehash, a recap of our favorite fashion-related blog posts of the week…

The superfantastic Manolo plays Nostradamus with his coverage of Eurovision, which he has deemed the pop apocalypse. In the words of Manolo: “Ayyyyyy!”

Fashionologie finds a breathtaking ring that merges two of our favorite luxuries: diamonds and Italian real estate.

Omiru helps out transgendered wannabes.

The Bag Snob composes an I-told-you-so letter to Michael Kors, expressing outrage at how his TV/socialite career has led to a hideous collection of spring handbags.

Almost Girl gets felt up by Diane von Furstenberg, who is obviously jealous of Julie’s pert knockers.

The Fashionable Kiffen reminds us of our first and foremost fashion muse: mom.

Fashion Addict Diary copes with the minimalist spring season by getting inspiration from (where else?) the streets of Paris.

I am Fashion may have had a spoiler post on America’s Next Top Model, but Tyra is the one responsbile for truly spoiling the show.

Summer Looks Courtesy of Papierdoll

So our May 2006 issue is up and running and the big question is where can we get all the featured bikinis and whatnot?

Here’s the info:

The Harajuku Swimwear line by designer Jo Ellen Stooks is hands down one of our favorites. Singer/Songwriter Leah Rennee (featured in this month’s photo story) slipped the bikinis on and did not want to give them back. (she eventually did) The secret is not yet out on her line so you’ll be one of the favored few to have your hands on it.

Her contact info is as follows:
website: http://www.harajukuswimwear.com
email: swim2006 |at| sbcglobal.net

Another up and coming bikini designer is Jill Goldsberry. Jill’s line is called Jill Kelly Swim. She’s been creating custom designs for awhile and her new line is already making waves. Her bikinis are known primarily for the comfort and the vibrant colors she uses.

website: coming soon
email:jillkellyswim |at| earthlink.net

Mention Papierdoll when you contact these designers and we’ll love you oh so much.

The Other Way into Fashion Editorial

MediaBistro is featuring an article titled “So You Wanna Work in Fashion Editorial?” which basically says the things that anyone with common sense and a perspective on trying to break into any lucrative industry would already know: 1) understand what the job really entails, 2) get yourself out there, 3) do tasks that completely underutilize your skills for absolutely no money and if you are completely brilliant and someone happens to notice, you might get a shot.

There must be some other way to write about fashion without enslaving yourself to a system designed to keep you forever in debt and perpetually frustrated… how could one find a way to get their fashion writing out there without years of photocopying and grunt work that culminates in a 200 word squib on espadrilles? What could one possilby do to cut through all the unneccessary hazing rituals of the glossies?

Well, YOU COULD START A FASHION BLOG… of course, it still doesn’t pay, but you get to write as weighty or fluffy content as you like, on your own schedule and while sitting around bored at your regular nine-to-five (and thus still have an income). Then you’ll just be enslaved to your computer screen (hey, if it isn’t porn, might as well be fashion).

Of course, if a glossy offered me a gig, I’d still jump at the opportunity.

Work Attire for the Recent Graduate

Ah, graduation … mine was filled with fears, beer(s), and tears—in that succession. While my unease was severely diminished once I secured gainful employment (just a week before G-day), this only led to more anxiety about entering the “real world”—replacing my jeans, flip flops and strapless tees for proper office attire. While my workplace is about as business causal as possible (without wearing jeans Mon-Thurs), I needed to revamp my wardrobe to convey my unrelenting ambition, fierce personality and impeccable taste while on the job.

I’d forgotten all of that pre-work world preparation until a few weeks ago, when my boss explained to my coworkers and myself (we are all young women in our 20s) that he wanted to purchase a gift certificate for his niece as a graduation gift, and needed suggestions on which stores we considered “one stop shops” for office attire. I was impressed with his thoughtfulness; after all, I spent most of my grad gift money on clothing for work anyway (before you go off and berate the men in your life for not being as thoughtful, keep in mind that my boss is 1) gay
and 2) already fashionably inclined … wait, that’s redundant).

My coworkers, who are generally a style-savvy bunch, threw around some ideas, and we agreed on some of the best stores for work clothes (for a casual office environment):
1. Nordstrom

Nordstrom is the store my boss ultimately decided to go with, mostly because it has so many options. (above: Nanette Lepore, Nanette Lepore, Trina Turk, Ella Moss, Theory)

2. Zara

Zara is the European wellspring of classic yet modern clothes has great options for the young professional.

3. BCBG Max Azria

An upscale option for trendsetters, BCBG’s (pronounce it in its proper French: “Bay-Say-Bay-Jey”) collections always feature designs that the working girl can also wear while off the clock.

Stores We Considered, but Declined to Recommend:

1. Banana Republic. All of us are former Banana loyalists who have recently become wary due to what we’ve perceived to be declining quality.

2. Ann Taylor. The consensus is that one can find a few great pieces at Ann Taylor, but its target audience is a slightly older set than the recent college grad crowd, and so wouldn’t make a good “one stop shop” for work clothes.
