New York Fashion Week Spring 2007: Venexiana

Kati Stern did not send a collection down the runway, but rather a series of mini collections. While this approach may have seemed afflicted with attention deficit disorder, it catered to Venexiana’s audience—a conglomeration of drag queens, eccentrics, and even the marginally famous fake Paris Hilton, who somehow managed to get a seat in the front row—who all rely on Venexiana for attention-seeking designs whose details are surprising.

The first series featured renditions of black and white eyelet and lace, with a Little Bo Peep goes street concept. Next were vests, halter dresses and pants that used buckled leather trim to create a distinct suspender/belted effect on crisscrossed shoulder straps, along the sides, and busts of jackets, and circling the calves lines of Capri pants. Next down the runway were playful springtime dresses in an array of eye-catching prints (especially a red and tan polka dot)—plunging opened fronts with ruffled collars carried this series, which otherwise broached on too commercial with a Hawaiian print gown and several tea length dresses. Lastly, the glitter, glitz and skin-baring Vegas-appropriate gowns had the drag queens salivating; a terracotta Grecian gown with metallic braid was a bit more refined, making it a likely candidate for the red carpet.
