Counterfeit Real

Used to be finding counterfeit clothing was easier than finding the real thing. Take a walk down canal street in NYC or any number of places and you too could own your very own counterfeit Louis Vuitton Insert Item Here. It appears those days are coming to a close (maybe), AP is reporting that the mayor of New York is about to open a can of whoop ass on counterfeiters in the movie business. You know, the people that record movies the night of release at movie theaters. You can easily tell the counterfeit stuff from the real deal because normally you may see someone not on screen walking in front of the perp’s camera setup or chatting loudly in the background distracting you from hearing the film being recorded.

How does this apply to fashion? Normally, where there’s one counterfeit item there is usually another. Those counterfeit copies of “Marie Antoinette” are usually next to fake Manolos ready to be hawked all over the U.S. … and Canal street.

Stirring up lust on and off the screen

While watching the Project Runway finale, I’d taken a trip to the little girl’s room during a commercial break and when I returned, my friend had paused and rewound her DVR to replay–not a designer freak out or Tim Gunn witticism–but an ad. Isn’t that what DVR was meant to avoid?

She had a look of shock on her face. “You have to watch this ad, I didn’t know they could put that on TV.” Lo and behold, the racy Bluefly ad (which I’d seen on the site)… girl gets dressed for a night out, and let’s just say she doesn’t make it out.

At the end of the ad, she said, “Isn’t that a bit… shocking?” I kind of shrugged–we all know the web is more edgy, perhaps its a bit of a juxtaposition to have that transferred onto the traditional boob tube screen.

But the ad accomplished its intended effect: after a moment of pause, my friend said somewhat sullenly, “All I was thinking as I watched it was, ‘I want that life.’” Ah, the concept of advertising will never change, no matter how many mediums it crosses.

Marie and Manolo

Maria Antoinette
Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette is a feast for the eyes. The film’s costume design, headed by Milena Canonero, turned out Oscar-worthy creations as extravagant as Versailles itself. So, who was chosen to produce Marie’s over-the-top footwear? Manolo Blahnik, of course — crowned king of shoe design.

Papierdoll July 2008 Interview

Interview: Thomas Voorn
Sonia Pereira Murphy

Considering the now ubiquitous trend of disposable fashion where all that seems to matter is a cute factor, Thomas Voorn's intellectual take on clothing is not only refreshing, but enlightening. Voorn's fascination with clothing calls to mind an anthropologist intrigued with skeletal remains, a sociologist... [Go]
