Reading the New York Times this morning, I happened to stumble on to an article by Laura M. Holson postulating why the movie Dreamgirls did not get the Best Picture Oscar nomination. I’ll answer it here in short form. It was a bad movie. While I won’t go starting some sort of movie review on a fashion blog, I’ll explain it like this: the movie’s plot left me looking for one, it droned on and on; and while I understand it was a musical, everytime someone began to sing I thought to myself, self, ugh.
The writer goes on to quote someone who states that the best picture nomination is not for “the most entertaining movie”. Well i’m here to say that even if it was, it shouldn’t even be in consideration for a nomination.
And if you are trying to glean something fashion related from this post, how’s this: at least it was nominated and probably should win for best costume design. There, I fit it in.

Armani over the net

Giorgio Armani has always been the innovative designer with some stumbles here and there. Overall it’s fun watching his genius work its’ way down the runway. This time he decided to be not only the innovative designer but the communicator as well. Armani broadcast his couture fashion show over the internet and to a captive audience at a Paris art museum.
Here’s where my 2 cents comes in if you’ve followed this blog at all. It seems as if designers are mortally terrified of the internet and to a greater extent, the internet press. While there are some bad apples (I would have added a link but that alone would stir the controversial Kool aid), Armani shows that there are advantages to this media. While he was not the first designer to do such a “radical” thing, his name can only add to the tidal wave. The music industry learned the hard way about snubbing the internet, let’s hope fashion doesn’t make the same mistake.

Lucien for the Summer

So the Lucien Pellat-Finet spring summer catalog is out and it’s obvious that I will be wearing something from the collection. If that means breaking the bank in all sorts and measures, so be it. The agitator of cashmere in the summer seems to be adding more flowers and wackiness to the line. The flowers incidentally, look like something that could be smoked for medicinal purposes. The long and short of it goes something like this: the line of leather bags harkens back to accessorieswear from the Pan-Am Stewardess days (a good thing), the denim just above the knee length skirts won’t have you reaching for the middle when you bend down and they’ve even thrown a bit of mod in the collection. Is it a go? Yes.

Considering the now ubiquitous trend of disposable fashion where all that seems to matter is a cute factor, Thomas Voorn's intellectual take on clothing is not only refreshing, but enlightening. Voorn's fascination with clothing calls to mind an anthropologist intrigued with skeletal remains, a sociologist... [Go]
