The mention of John Rocha’s name has always gained mixed reviews. However, based on his beyond standing room crowd (people sat in the isle and a friend of mine nearly sat on my lap), you could say the sceptics converted (or at last they believed). He did not disappoint. The show opened in full drama to the live operatic sound of soprano Miriam Blennerhasset. Rocha was all about black this season with masculine basics such as men’s suits laying the groundwork for a sensible twist on femininity. Trousers were cropped for both men and women and sat low on the waist. Blazers were double-breasted then teased and tousled with bows and subtle sequence. An embellished lace skirt detailed with silver foil print was a modern take on a classic style. A palette of pearl, silver and charcoal also set off Rocha’s intricately detailed designs. This was overall a satisfying show, although I had a certain déjà vu with some pieces. In essence it was still a solid collection.
