Just the setting alone at the Unconditional Autumn/Winter ’07 show for London Fashion Week conjured up nostalgic feelings of being at some basement punk concert with its black brick walls, smoke screens, and diverse personas floating about (i.e. naked pole dancer as you walked in the venue). I like this “get upâ€. It makes for great story telling, and story telling is just what Philip Stevens, the jack-of-all-trades, did with his laidback look, sleek and flow cuts, and well edited styling. One could easily see where this story was heading had the 80’s group Wham! been transported into the matrix. Colors wheat, black, grey, white, neon (orange and green), and electric blue definitely gave the collection attitude.
Standouts: Grey pencil skirt with slant side pockets paired with sheet grey blouse with black line button placket and long black trench; silver shorts with suspenders paired with grey, long sleeve top; wheat sports coat with grey cowl neck top and black trousers and black skully cap (menswear); body defining, wheat color dress with zipper detail on wrists and shoulders; brown trench paired with black scarf and brown top with black design and black trousers (menswear); and lime green velvet, swing dress.
Keep in the closets: Bear looking jumpsuits worn by both male and female model; neon orange track jacket paired with black pants embellished with splackets of white paint and neon orange stripes down the sides (menswear); white tails coat with black knee cropped pants paired with hot pink socks and black “fuzzy†ball scarf (menswear); and wheat color, velvet cowl neck, knee length dress with tie around the waist.
After the smoke cleared, the electronic music seized, and the show subsided I sat in my chair, looking at my writing pad thinking…â€How can I write on this?†Forward to a few days later, I’m now sitting in front of my computer answering, “Easily.†This is the type of show that makes it easy to write about because everything experienced touched all the senses and not just one, and who wouldn’t want all their senses touched. Kudos, Philip! Job well done.
