Random Oscar Observations

Was it me or was A.L.T. talking a little too fast when interviewing everyone? I almost thought he was going to deck the interviewees everytime he thrust the microphone into their faces? His breakdowns of what the actors/actresses were wearing was spot on, when I actually caught what he said.

The good thing about wearing dresses that make you part of the worst dressed list, is that you’ll never have to see them again. For instance: Cameron Diaz: who looked like she was wearing an Imelda Marcos throwaway, Jennifer Hudson may have to fire her stylist (yeah, I went there), Anne Hathaway who obviously learned nothing from her movie (whatever that bow thing was ruined it all), Shaun Robinson looked like she was going to bed instead of an awards ceremony, Kirsten Dunst wore something that seemed to have dead birds at the bottom portion, I could go on. But you get the picture.

All I want to talk about when it comes to best dressed is Rachel Weisz. She wore a gorgeous Vera Wang vintage (I love the accents at the top), the train was the “right” length, Jimmy Choos and Cartier jewels. While namedropping is not a favorite pasttime, she got the Oscars right.

London Fashion Week Fall 2007: Unconditional

Unconditional
Click photo above for full gallery

Just the setting alone at the Unconditional Autumn/Winter ’07 show for London Fashion Week conjured up nostalgic feelings of being at some basement punk concert with its black brick walls, smoke screens, and diverse personas floating about (i.e. naked pole dancer as you walked in the venue). I like this “get up”. It makes for great story telling, and story telling is just what Philip Stevens, the jack-of-all-trades, did with his laidback look, sleek and flow cuts, and well edited styling. One could easily see where this story was heading had the 80’s group Wham! been transported into the matrix. Colors wheat, black, grey, white, neon (orange and green), and electric blue definitely gave the collection attitude.

Standouts: Grey pencil skirt with slant side pockets paired with sheet grey blouse with black line button placket and long black trench; silver shorts with suspenders paired with grey, long sleeve top; wheat sports coat with grey cowl neck top and black trousers and black skully cap (menswear); body defining, wheat color dress with zipper detail on wrists and shoulders; brown trench paired with black scarf and brown top with black design and black trousers (menswear); and lime green velvet, swing dress.

Keep in the closets: Bear looking jumpsuits worn by both male and female model; neon orange track jacket paired with black pants embellished with splackets of white paint and neon orange stripes down the sides (menswear); white tails coat with black knee cropped pants paired with hot pink socks and black “fuzzy” ball scarf (menswear); and wheat color, velvet cowl neck, knee length dress with tie around the waist.

After the smoke cleared, the electronic music seized, and the show subsided I sat in my chair, looking at my writing pad thinking…”How can I write on this?” Forward to a few days later, I’m now sitting in front of my computer answering, “Easily.” This is the type of show that makes it easy to write about because everything experienced touched all the senses and not just one, and who wouldn’t want all their senses touched. Kudos, Philip! Job well done.

Color Theory: Prada Fall 2007.

I have a strange relationship with color. I seldom wear it, yet I nearly force other people to. Miuccia Prada may just be my savior this winter. With an endless array of muted, delicious brights, she proved that color does work in a bleak season. Lovely grandpa cardigans and colorblock legwarmers brought this homely-chic collection to life in an innovative glamour. Hemlines fell at or below the knee creating a softness not found in the majority of other shows thus far. Tops were thoughtfully constructed leaving much to the imagination while retaining the sophisticated heir of the collection. Thrown-together-and-looking-fabulous seemed to be the motto at hand, and while it wasn’t a collection for everyone, it proved that Prada can be just as playful as its diffusion line, only in a grown-up manner.

Standout pieces include the quirky legwarmers (we’re suggesting getting on the list NOW, as we all know how those darn grey knee-highs turned out last season!), vests, and the coats…how much do I love coats that look like the ’70s threw up? Very, very much.
