A Fashion Writer's observation and other Monday Thoughts

I was on Cathy Horyn’s On the Runway blog and read some of the comments and realized no matter where (who) you are you’re never immune to biting criticism. For example a commenter wrote on her blog (in response to her review of Rei Kawakubo’s Comme des Garcons show):

In the March 3rd NYT fashion review Cathy Horyn referred to Rei Kawakubo’s Comme de Garcons velvet jersey jacket with appliqued hands as imaginative…imaginative???? Ms. Horyn someone at your level reporting fashion should have some fashion history background; don’t you think? The applique hands are not imaginative…have your heaerd of Elsa Schiaparelli…if not research it and you will find applique hands on a Schiaparelli design…it’s not imaginative if it has already been done!

Ouch. In all fairness to Ms. Horyn, breaking down the significance of the word imaginative to the subatomic level is arguing semantics. Kawakubo’s show was in it’s totality imaginative. The high-belted deconstructed jackets, sheer mesh thrown all around were truly imaginative in it’s usage as applied to the Comme des Garcons line.

As an aside and still targeting Horyn for a second, I’m going to have to agree with her on her assessment of the Karl Lagerfeld show. What a beautiful photo on her blog (from Getty images) that illustrates what happens when you’re given a shitload of money to put on an amazing show. New York is the Hudson River compared to Paris’ Pacific Ocean Fashion shows.

i hate when people get all hot and bothered about cathy horyn, it really gets my goat. she has a great writing style and perspective on the shows… that’s why she’s the critic and they are not.
