Street Mix, Multi-Cultural

Balenciaga

On his Fall 2007 collection for Balenciaga, Nicolas Ghesquière says:

“It’s a big mix—a street mix, with symbols and colors that are very multicultural. It’s like in your room, on campus. It’s about how girls become themselves.”

Japan Fashion Week via Showstudio

While I wasn’t at Japan fashion week, it sounds like Penny Martin of ShowStudio fame had “fun” at the Ele Tra show. She writes and I quote:

Those (Eastern European?) models were drowning in shift dresses and cropped jackets that looked grandmotherly, as opposed to chic or sporty.

But what really got my attention was her photo from Toshikazu Iwaya’s show:

Toshikazu Iwaya

I just personally latched on to the poufy sleeves and the cuts at the hemline. Youwza. < <- (Did I just use that word?)

Stop me if you've heard this one before: I think that some of the more interesting shows happen outside of the range of oft covered shows (though London was particularly fun this year). For example, Moscow's show has me looking forward to seeing what Natasha Glazkova comes up with this season and Japan's offerings are no different. I followed the coverage through Showstudio (i'm guessing Style deems it not important enough for their attention) and realized what's coming from these designers holding shows in far off places from the fashion map are as relevant as any show in Paris or Milan. Penny may not have liked the Ele Tra show, but I envy the fact that she was simply there.

See Show Studio’s complete coverage here.

Naomi does dirt

Naomi CampbellI think common folk revel in the misfortune of the higher end, especially when the higher end kinda, sorta deserves it. Take Ms. Campbell for instance, I read the New York Daily News this morning and found this more than mildly interesting.

While she’s doing community service for having her cell phone break when it collided with her maid’s head, she has to deal with the aforementioned common folk. She arrives on the scene looking as if she belongs on a runway, she’s got her “work” boots slung over her shoulders (and the work boots mind you look somewhat stylish), and her hair and makeup are impeccable.

This is a woman who knows how to take her punishment like a man.

Style Prophet: Canadian Designer Leads Fashion's Future
Stephanie Nolasco

At the age of fourteen, Lacy Barry was given a religious premonition of her future with fashion. The word "ephoe," a plural form of the eight ritual garments worn by Jewish high priests, appeared in her dream. Barry, age 24, is the founder of Ephoe Inc., a label whose influences come from lush tropical colors, Audrey Hepburn and Victorian couture... [Go]
