That’s right folks, Natalia Vodianova is on the July 2007 cover of Vogue magazine wearing Nina Ricci no less. The celebrities are nowhere to be found. Somewhere Nicole Richie is turning over in her grave… I’m kidding.
And while said model is dramatically overused, it’s almost startling that the fashion magazine is using, gasp.. a fashion model for the cover. Can it be that the headmistress is feeling the breath of one of her underlings on the hairs of her neck? Did she run out of burnt out female celebrities? Could it be that this is going to be a trend and deep in the hallowed halls of Conde Nast the August issue will feature another model? The suspense can truly kill.

You know, Eva, this is so interesting. I was just reading about how in the early years Conde Nast tracked covers against revenue and returns (mags unsold on the rack). This was when he was deciding whether to go with photos over illustrations for the covers. It was a big question at the time.
You know these calculations are still happening. What cover will sell off the rack. So the celebrities have been big. BUT I think when the editors of the glossies started seeing all the ad contracts going to celebs (LV to Scarlett for example) they might have realized that they were losing a bit of power. After all, the celebs don’t need the glossies too much, whereas the models without the glossies are nothing. So there has always been this kingmaker element to the editor model relationship that isn’t really there with celebs as much, I’d imagine. This cover is an extension of the multimodel cover month before last (or whenever) that was about 1.) We’ll tell You who the next f*ing top models are and 2.) taking back the covers from the celebs and trying to move back into kingmaker position.
P.S. I like that Natalia. She is not only lovely and capable of great flexibility, but a pretty regular alright girl as well.
