Be Careful What you Wish for

Summer Dresses

I’ll get flamed for this but here goes:

I’m not a fan of the pouf, flirty summer dress and will explain in 100 words or less. It makes every woman walking down the street in Manhattan look as if they are pregnant. Mind you I’ve been wishing for something to de-denimize the female populace of New York City, but the old adage be careful what you wish for has never been more appropriate than in this particular case.

For some reason, it seems as if these type of dresses don’t appreciate the shape of someone who just worked out over the winter with their personal trainer fighting to lose every last inch of fat-pound. While these gripes might be petty, small and pedestrian, they are real… to me at least. A quick example of this is the 7 designer pieces pictured in Ellen Tien’s “A Weekend Retreat” piece for the New York Times. While all 7 are beautiful pieces and allows women to loosen that vice grip on slinky denim for the summer (denim that was all the rage last summer, and the summer before that, and the summer before that summer…I go on and digress), I still feel as if something more in the vein of Kate and Kass is the way to go, if I had to pick from the photo, the second from the left works well and the third from the right works even better. But why pick from the photo in the first place, why not just abandon the pouf dress madness?

Flame on.

grrr I know, I am guilty of wearing the pregnant looking dresses/tops. They are just so darn comfortable and effortless. But alas, just the other day my DH told me that a whole bunch of people have been asking him whether I was pregnant.

i’m not a fan of high waisted jeans that are obviously made to cover your stomach pooch. has everyone gone mad?

i actually think the whole dress look is over…it’s just everywhere now. last summer, i was all about the dresses and i guess i’m sick of it now. but i completely agree with your point. and i love kate and kass. they actually remind me of mike and chris.

I like an empire waist on a top or dress if it’s constructed a certain way. These dresses and tops I am seeing on woman and hollywood’s elite won’t last long, they look like f**cking muu muus for goodness sakes. I definitely think it’s going to be a short term trend.

I’ve been wearing the dresses for awhile. I like them. I guess the downside to that though is that they seem to be a compromise between the quasi bohemian thing happening last year and the dressing up thing happening earlier this year.

New York is definitely super denimized (to borrow your word Eva). If there’s a type of denim, we are probably wearing them. I’m ok with the fact that these dresses sort of steer us away from that trend but the question now is.. what’s next if not for the pregnant dresses.

I like the dresses, but the shampoo girl at my salon asked me a few weeks ago if I was pregnant. I’ve been wearing them alot I guess. They’re cute and so easy when you’re not having an oh so slim day…but it’s not going to last into the fall.

I love this fashion, but i must admit it’s because I just had a baby. It’s perfect to hide my not perfect anymore belly. I really love it. I’m so lucky it was fashionable when I was pregnant so I didn’t have to wear these ugly pregnancy clothes.

Anyway. Maybe it’s not the best trend ever, but I like a trend that everybody can wear.Fashion should be about style, not about work out.

Okay, I am not anti-pregnancy dress, but I do understand your woes of wanting to compliment a toned body. I too have suffered too much stairmaster and elliptical to hide beneath a shapeless sack. Also, the thought of being mistaken as pregnant is all too horrifying. If we can’t banish the trend completely, perhaps a belt to reign in the poofiness is in order?

I have to respectfully disagree…living in Texas, you do all you can to stay cool during the day, so these dresses are perfect. I can’t imagine wearing jeans during the day when I am out running errands. I save the form fitting attire for the evening!
