I’m a bit excited to see what several designers are coming up with for the fall season. But I’ve wrapped my mind in particular around two, maybe it’s because they are going to be at our event this Wednesday, perhaps it could just be that I am a sucker for well constructed sustainable fashion.
Zonkiri was interviewed by our editor Michelle Bell last season and provided great insight on how he begins his process of designing for the different seasons and what he was looking to do for the fall, we’ve dug up the video for your viewing pleasure. We also dug up the two photo galleries from the style salon event below. We had a great time in February and are looking to do it all over again this Wednesday. If you haven’t rsvp’d, you can do it right now before the list closes. Without further ado, here are the galleries and videos from the Style Salon:

For the Fall

If you’re wondering what is the one item we will be running into the ground this fall, it is very simple. This coat from PPQ. The full collection is a little mind jarring at first, and we had to dig to find, but some things are worth the work. Take a look at the full collection.

Uncertainty

I’ve been getting a lot of questions pertaining to what I am most looking forward to during fashion week. I never really go, save that for the team of Michelle, Ali and Mike who are going in my stead. My fashion sense tends to be topsy turvy and a complete 180 from what everyone else (read the fashion blogging intelligentsia) thinks is “cool.” I think that is primarily one of the reasons I hold back my preference of what I want to see coming down the runway. But if we were to talk in abstract, just flowing extemporaneously, I’d simply say that I’d want to see London, coming down a New York runway. It’s not that American designers aren’t any good, far from. And maybe that was a weak way to preface what I am about to say. It’s just that I actually like seeing the names that are not necessarily in super bright lights that everyone tends to fawn over. Move over Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs. I’m partial to Nicole Miller, Bill Blass, Joanna Mastroianni, Tracy Reese and Reem Acra. So what am I looking forward to in New York?
Some imagination.
I want a bit of the daring, bold concepts, possibly a design that doesn’t make functional sense, (thank you Alexandre Herchcovitch) but is on the site of artistic freedom. Maybe something a bit de classe’ for Spring, an impractical long, flowing, multi-colored skirt from Heatherette that questions and answers whether this will be a commercial success (it probably won’t, but who cares?)
So what am I looking forward to in New York for Spring? To give a rather ambiguous answer… I’m not sure.

Ooooo
I went to Cathy Horyn’s blog this morning and read what had to be the most life altering post ever. This is not hyperbole folks this is truth. And God bless Cathy Horyn for making these very significant points. God bless her.
In her post entitled Raising the Roof, Horyn looks at Anna Wintour’s influence on fashion from a monopolistic perspective. While she gives praise to her work and the free hand Wintour allows editors and writers at Vogue, also telling the now worn story of how Wintour hooked Marc Jacobs up with a fashion show held at Trump Tower via The Donald, when Jacobs couldn’t hold a free show at a Golden Krust restaurant (try getting into a Jacobs’ show now by the way). She also talks about the underbelly of the great works and why it is always good to scrutinize those works.
I’ll just break it down like this: a fashion editor wields considerable power. A fashion editor at the #1 fashion magazine in the US basically runs the world industry. What she/he does both good and bad has lasting effects on the entire industry. The dissenting voice of bloggers (when we’re not kissing ass) and the freedom that the internet gives us is a powerful quasi-counterbalance to that ivory tower on 42nd street (or is it 44th?, I digress). I’ll leave you with two quick excerpts from her blog that really punctuate my furiously fast head nodding at Cathy Horyn:
The most fun we can have in fashion right now is to question everything. I was sitting in a meeting recently when I heard someone ask if a certain talented young designer was part of the CFDA/Vogue Fund, as if this was the gold seal of approval. But, of course, it is not. It is just one system of measuring talent. By the way, the designer was not a candidate for the fund.
and:
…dissent is not an un-American activity. And to suggest that a person with an opposing view “doesn’t have to buy” the offending product is a little like saying, “Shut up and eat your peas.”
Amen, Ms. Horyn, amen.
