No Chewing Gums

Claudia Schiffer

This is an international topic to be sure, but I couldn’t miss the chance to talk about Claudia Schiffer’s appearance in Vogue and though Naomi will hate me because I am talking about another blonde hair blue-eyed model, I can’t resist. Wanted to pull a couple of quick quotes from her interview in Vogue Paris like this one (on being Karl Lagerfeld’s muse once again):

…We were sitting at the same table during a fashion night last November in Madrid. He suggested that we work together again and I was elated. A few months later we shot an ad for Dom Perignon in rue de l’Uninversite’. He had me dressed as several fantasies : A Chinese prostitute, Marie-Antoinette, a black dancer…Everybody was exhausted but at 4am, he and I were still having a ball. Later we did the Chanel croisierie collection just as happily.

another quote on how she stays radiant at 36:

“…I have only one rule : everything is organic and of the best quality. No chemicals, no sodas, no-chewing gum…”

Had I known that chewing gum was the reason I could not put on my pair of JOE’s skinny jeans I would have abandoned it a long time ago. Damn you Claudia. The full interview can be viewed here.

The Rough YSL

YSL takes a contrarian point of view in their Fall 2007 campain. Similar to Marc Jacobs’ rough edged look, not necessarily amateurish but unpolished. We think that’s a great thing. The uber polished look doesn’t reflect how anything will appear on the socialite going to her socialite event. You can contrast that with the super done up ads from Dior last year and see that designers are more content with being tastefully gruff. Witness the Dior ad below for the Winter 2007 season:

Gap Goes European

Gap

With Target going international and Wal-Mart doing godknowswhat, it was about time that The Gap got into the action and we say why not? Everyone has some sort of limited edition collection thingy and Gap still holds a place in the collective hearts of many (remember their premium brand of 1957 jeans, so rustic). This fall season, by the hand of Vogue Paris Stylist Marie Amelie-Sauve we’re treated to Cotton Cashmere striped dresses, pleated neck mini-dresses and two-way zip sweater coats. The price points are higher than normal Gap clothing, but still fair all things considered, and the sizing is a little small (this is European my friends, no high fructose corn syrup here). It debuted last week and runs the season (or until it all runs out).

Take a look here.

The Age of E-mail

New York Times

I was looking at the New York Times fashion feature Apres Rehab: A Lovely Sobriety by Cathy Horyn and deconstructed the first photo (at the top). Aside from the cool little lighting trick and trying to figure out where the photo was taken, I looked at the credits which I will reprint here: Lanvin zip-up silk blouse, $1,090, and Alexander Wang wide-leg herringbone pants, $585, both at Barneys New York. Karen Walker leather belt, $132 at Mick Margo; LaCrasia leather gloves, $200; Patricia Von Musulin hand-carved ebony ring, $825 at Takashimaya; Kelly Christy felt fedora, $300 to order from kellychristyhats@hotmail.com; ChloƩ leather satchel, $2,595 at ChloƩ.

Notice anything strange? Yeah me too. Kelly Christy felt fedora, $300 to order from kellychristyhats@hotmail.com. I don’t want to make a bigger deal of this than it already is, but think about it, to order Kelly Christy hats, you can send Kelly Christy an e-mail and literally tell her what you want. Unheard of 15 years ago, we have direct contact with designers who have amazing products but might only have a tiny footprint in retail. Minus the millions of social networking sites, porn and endless e-mail forwards, the internet is damned wonderful.

Papierdoll July 2008 Interview

Interview: Thomas Voorn
Sonia Pereira Murphy

Considering the now ubiquitous trend of disposable fashion where all that seems to matter is a cute factor, Thomas Voorn's intellectual take on clothing is not only refreshing, but enlightening. Voorn's fascination with clothing calls to mind an anthropologist intrigued with skeletal remains, a sociologist... [Go]
