Day 1: Fashion Week Diary (BCBG, Jason Wu, Venexiana)

Well it’s the end of day one of fashion week and I’m already blistered and exhausted (but then, I’m not normally a city girl, we use cars where I come from). Even though seeing the tents, and actually sauntering inside and seeing all the beautiful people isn’t as exciting after the first fashion week you live through, the moment when the lights go down and the music goes up and the first model stomps her way out there’s always an instant of exhilaration. Or, if there isn’t, maybe you’ve been doing this too long or you’re too jaded. It’s just very exciting to be part of, and to see happening right before you.

Today my first show of the week was in the BIG tent: BCBG Max Azria (photos coming soon). The belted waist is still key for spring, and shapes are still ethereal and floaty. But the waist is more ladylike, natural waist or above, and floaty shouldn’t be confused with sloppy or oversized. There’s still a very key element of fit that shows off curves and/or a slim torso. Later, at Jason Wu the waist was also emphasized, but this time with very tailored shapes. Not to say severe, but very fitted. And at Venexiana, at 9 p.m. after a very, very long day and a fabulous Papierdoll party, there was a mix of nautical day looks and elegant evening. The nautical pieces were very period, 20-ish, almost to the point of looking costumy or dated. But the lovely floral dresses and evening pieces looked beautiful.

So, after negotiating the taxi strike zone fares, expiring my first $10 metro card and taking the train the wrong direction only once, my second fashion week is officially underway.
