While we’d all love to believe that fashion is flawless, sometimes things happen. With the youtube/instant/in-a-minute generation, the mishaps will be broadcast all over the world in less than an hour, give or take. The latest mishap that made it on the internet air is model Sarah Walsh who fell through a runway during a fashion show. The hole was caused by Shao-Lin Monk performers (never did I think I would write a sentence like that) who engaged in a spectacle before the actual show. Walsh laughs about it now that it has become fodder for the internet, and the jokes don’t end there. There are several fashion bloopers and outtakes from various runway shows and other happenings including: The model who had trouble with her heels, the model whose heel simply fell off (you’ve got to love her though as she kept on walking), Naomi Campbell babbling then going paranoid, Naomi Campbell falling (and no one helps her, ugh), then there’s a whole segment from Fashion Television on the difficulties in walking on the runway. We feel for you girls!!

Shanghai Surprise

Though we’re sure Karl Lagerfeld and Nikolas Ghesquiere will sleep well tonight and not worry about the designers at Shanghai Fashion week, it’s worth noting the strides the designers at the so-called lesser shows are making. An example of this would be an Empire Waist dress shown from the Spring 2007 collection of WXW & WXK. On any other occasion and obscuring the headline, one would swear on a stack of bibles that it came directly from (insert Eurpoean Atelier here). So what’s the moral of the story? Never underestimate the underdog? Don’t always believe Chinese items are knockoffs? Using random consonants that resemble radio station call letters might be the cool thing to do if you are looking to name your fashion house? Yes… AND
Start looking for these designers at obscure boutiques in Manhattan and if you can’t find them, demand that your obscure boutique carry it. We can virtually guarantee that you might be the only one wearing a Shanghai designer in New York.

Get the Look - Fall/Holiday Makeup

photography Danielle Le Moine
We often get questions on achieving the looks that you see in photoshoots on Papierdoll and in other publications. The questions that constantly come up go something like this:
a) How do I get that look?
b) Do all models have flawless skin?
c) How long does it take to put something like that together?
The short answer is yes, no and it depends.
For more detail I actually talked to a makeup artist who worked with us in the past, Shelly Stevens, and asked her exactly what it takes to get some of the looks you see in photoshoots. For example, what can a person with combination skin, or with issues applying their own makeup do to get a great look for fall?
Here she came with several tips to help almost everyone:
I hope this pleases your readers as I am going from off the top of my head here. Models come in many different skin textures just like we all do. Some models have great skin, others have skin that look like land mines but have great bone structure or some other discerning feature that make them a model.
“You’ll never look exactly like a model from a photoshoot because she is her and you are you. What that means is that everyone is different and has their own look. You can attain a similar look and in many cases you might even look better. Find out what makeup is being used and test the makeup out in a shade, hue and tone that you are comfortable with. There are so many different varieties and textures of makeup one size does not fit all.

For example, in the photos I’ve attached to this article, the makeup artist, Yisell Santos, used Makeup Forever Foundation 1 for her foundation, Urban Decay Bronzer in Toasted and Mattesse Loose Shadow in Bronze. Yes, that’s a lot of bronze, but the point is that’s what worked for that shoot. If you have a darker complexion or are extremely pale, you may want to go easy on the bronzer or skip it altogether. Use softer shades if your skin is on either of those extremes. This is especially the case with Fall and Winter. You never want the makeup to overpower your natural features.
The most important thing I can tell your readers above the makeup tip is to take care of their skin. Moisturize when necessary, drink water (they say it’s an old wives tale, but water helps the skin), use cremes as opposed to lotions and stay away from products heavy with chemicals or with alcohol. Alcohol is a major no-no. Hope that helps.”

Fashion on the Web this Week

The fashion bloggers are active this week with a myriad of topics. They touch on everything ranging from planning a holiday party outfit to eating as if you’ll never gain a pound. One of our favorite posts this week focuses on knockoff fashion. It has received a lot of ink recently mainly because of how the knockoffs are getting remarkably close to the originals. There’s a conspiracy theory floating around that alludes to knockoffs being made in the same factories where the originals are created. Here’s a listing of highlighted blog posts around the web this week:
Hooray for Hollywould? 55 Secret Street has mixed feelings about the new Hollywould for Target collection.
Stiletto Jungle stumbled upon a stash of Hayden-Harnett handbags marked down to under $200.
