Fall ‘08 Fashion Week Preview: Carlos Miele

Carlos Miele

Visited Carlos Miele’s store in the meatpacking district to get an idea on the potential direction for his Fall 2008 collection being shown in New York during fashion week. Walked away with two thoughts: first, his store is huge, especially by Manhattan standards, and everything is artistically organized. From the furniture to the clothes on the rack, it is all an experiment in art. Miele considers himself not only a fashion designer, but an artist and booster of the arts. It comes as no surprise that his store would reflect that thinking. His website says as much with a section dedicated solely to Miele’s love.

So what’s on tap for Fall?

Trying to get a read on the designer’s intentions for the fall season is an exercise. We may want to know what we’re wearing from Miele this Fall, but the cues from past seasons are no indication. The previous Fall collection was a dramatic departure from his Fall collection the season prior to that. Last season he toned down the glitz from the fabulous giltz-o-rama that was his previous Fall collection. For Spring 2008 he brought it back just a tinge. He stayed true to his Brazilian metro roots in almost all collections, but that says nothing for this one. All this pondering makes wondering what Miele has cooking in the kitchen that much fun. We’re rsvpd and ready to go. To see photos from his past collection, click here.

Shu Uemura passes

Shue Uemura

The quintessential makeup artist, Shu Uemura died this past December from acute pneumonia in Tokyo. If there was ever a case for someone doing it all in their respective field, it is Uemura. From creating looks for movies that are often duplicated, to making a line of popular upscale cosmetics and opening an architectural marvel that is his cosmetics boutique (then opening stores all around the world). Uemura cast a long shadow in the makeup industry and most were inevitably touched by his contributions. He leaves his wife and son.

Marc Jacobs Ignores

Kudos to Marc Jacobs for ignoring Blackwell’s Hollywood’s worst dress list and going with Victoria Beckham for his series of ads.. While deep down agreeing with Blackwell is a natural inclination, Jacobs decided Posh is just right for his series of ads. The internet favorite is Posh’s legs dangling out of a Marc Jacob’s bag.

NYC Fashion Week Preview - Sean John

Sean John

While we love smaller fashion designers, they’re scrappy, they usually come with the creative flair where larger designers fair to tread, can’t help but preview the Sean John show. Why? Because although the aesthetic started in the streets it went upscale fast, while maintaining an edginess found nowhere else. Putting a finger on it is an altogether difficult thing to do. The answer is the street. It is urban…yet not so much. When news of a women’s line started to spread, everyone asked is this from the same guy that brought us Craig Mack, Total, Jodeci and Notorious BIG? Yup. Notch one for upscale street chic as well.

One can only wonder what Sean John will be once the show starts.

Papierdoll July 2008 Interview

Interview: Thomas Voorn
Sonia Pereira Murphy

Considering the now ubiquitous trend of disposable fashion where all that seems to matter is a cute factor, Thomas Voorn's intellectual take on clothing is not only refreshing, but enlightening. Voorn's fascination with clothing calls to mind an anthropologist intrigued with skeletal remains, a sociologist... [Go]
