The African Print Anything

Papierdoll Recommends:

Michael Kors Handbag

Ports1961 was apparently on to something. While everyone was concentrating on putting panties on the outside of clothing, they said…African print is where it is at. While I loathe to disagree with them (and I won’t), let’s give credit where credit is due. X-Clan really pioneered the whole thing during the early 90s. But let’s get real, almost everything African print is hot right now and for the foreseeable future. The melange of colors is what really gets you. It looks like nothing else in the world. Thank you Professor X for being such a pioneer.

How to Pronounce Designer’s Names

Balenciaga

The Wall Street Journal has an article that was long in coming for this fashion industry thing we love: how to pronounce designer’s names. The article gives phonetic spellings for each designer’s names. Some of the names are difficult to pronounce from an English speaker/reader’s perspective. A good chunk of the hard to pronounce names are Italian and French designers. Thing with fashion is that there are designers from Russia, Japan and other countries whose names are just as difficult if not moreso. So this primer is a godsend. If someone were to create an annual translation matrix I would buy it. Here’s an excerpt from the article:

Jean Paul Gaultier (zhan paul GO-tee-AY), Alber Elbaz for Lanvin (al-BEAR el-BAHZ for lon-VAN), and Nicolas Ghesquière (NEE-ko-la guess-KYAIR).

Mamma mia! The Italian names can play tricks on you, too — such as Bulgari (BOOL-ga-ree), Ungaro (OON-ga-ro), Versace (ver-SAH-chay) and Zegna (ZANE-ya). And from Spain comes the tricky Loewe (LO-ee-VAY).

What they do that I am really happy about is clearing up the Ralph Lauren confusion. It’s pronounced just like the girl’s name…Lauren… for further clarification it rhymes with foreign. Not La-WREN. Read the full article here.

Former Pornstar Makes Good

So I’ll be the first to admit that I admire Jenna Jameson’s business acumen. She started in a male dominated industry, turned that same industry on its ear and ended up being a top executive in the industry. Now during Los Angeles fashion week and we assume beyond, Jameson, who no longer performs in said movies, is a part of PETA.org’s with the subheading Discover the Pleasure of Pleather. (see photo below)

Jenna Jameson

Whether this takes off or not is anyone’s guess, but it’s safe to assume that with this happening at Los Angeles fashion week, the industry may take notice even if it’s just a raised eyebrow.

Los Angeles Fashion Week - Joseph Domingo

So our lead fashion week photographer Anne-Marie is in Los Angeles right now taking in the sights and sounds. LA Fashion week always seems to be the bastardized stepchild of the fashion week season. I was on the phone a day ago with another editor who said something to the effect that the fashion week season ends in Paris. That may be true but this step child is looking to come out of the shadows a bit. Here’s a shot from the Joseph Domingo show at Los Angeles Fashion Week:
