John Varvatos Goes to CBGB and Closes the Show
The punk rockers are going to be ultra pissed when they read this one. John Varvatos pitched his tent at the former CBGB on the lower east side. He basically cleaned up the unsavory elements, the spiked hairdos, the spiked leather bracelets and the doc martens. The store opened this past Monday with items that cost more than most punk rockers could afford. Varvatos though wanted to keep the spirit of CBGBs alive and did only minimal changes to the interior. Indeed he tells MTV that he
“really wanted this space to be a very cultural space, and by that I mean I want anybody to be able to walk in off the street and really sense the history that was here, I wanted you to walk into the space and think it’s not a commercial space and feel like it’s about music, that it’s about art, that it’s about rock and roll. We wanted to marry history, rock and roll and fashion. What we’ve created is a unique environment and a unique cultural space.”
