Naomi Sims, First Black Supermodel Dies

Ask the uninformed who the first black supermodel is and you’ll get answers ranging from Veronica Webb to Beverly Johnson and even the relatively recent (by comparison) Naomi Campbell. But those who remember picking up the August 1978 issue of Cosmo (two years before I was born) will recall a model by the name of Naomi Sims. I missed that cover, but you can’t miss the impact she had in the industry and will continue to have so long as a person of color graces the cover of today’s magazines.
