Getting to know your Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Winners: Prabal Gurung

As the CFDA Fashion Fund awards become more ubiquitous, the Ecco Domani awards are becoming known for introducing more new names to the fashion scene. The Italian wine maker awards $25,000 each to seven winners, enabling them to make their New York Fashion Week dreams come true. Since these are designers who usually haven’t shown before, they’re more likely to be under the radar so I thought I’d give you a little introduction.
Least likely of needing an introduction given fans such as Oprah, Leighton Meester and Demi Moore, is Prabal Gurung. Demi has worn the designer at least three times to high profile events, including one of his one-shouldered, feathered designs for her fragrance launch in June, which you can see here. Check out Leighton and other celebs like Rachel Weisz wearing his designs here.
A former Bill Blass design director, Gurung garnered enough attention with his first self-funded collection of 20 looks in a gallery in Chelsea in February 2009 that his second namesake collection for Spring 2010 was featured along with the big guns in all the usual places like Style.com. He was also named best new designer of the year by the Red Carpet Fashion Awards – and we all know red carpet popularity is key for a young designer in the current economic climate.
You can also get to know Gurung through his robust social media network, check him out on Facebook and Twitter. (You’re our fan on Facebook, too, right? And follow our twitter.)
