Menahan Street Band Strikes Again
January 29, 2013Every now and again (and much to rarely for my taste) Brooklyn-based Menahan Street Band drops an album. But because of the instrumental nature of the music, you rarely see a visual attached to the work. This time is different though as in late 2012 they released an album entitled “The Crossing”. Probably one of the best albums of 2012 (we’re hoping it gets some degree of shine in 2013), The Crossing has one of the better styled videos in terms of fall 2012 fashion. The female character in their latest video is beautifully dressed, but we’re left wondering who did the styling on her? We want to see more of your work!

Esther McCabeJoanna Mastroianni Fall 2013
January 22, 2013
The Fall Fashion Week season kicks off with Mercedes Benz fashion week in New York. Sifting through preferred shows to attend and the shows that are known to have something decidedly new or fresh is not easy. Joanna Mastroianni‘s showings are almost always the exception. We’ve covered her collections for nearly 8 years and in every fall showing we’ve been impressed by her versatility and ability to create something wholly different. This year looks to be no different. We’re expecting to see some use of fur and an accentuation of slim silhouettes. We’re also expecting a beautiful dress in Mastroianni’s signature black. Finally you can expect the curve ball. Mastroianni tends to surprise with her final piece so anything is possible and more likely probable. Fashion week comes to New York February 7th to the 14th.
Esther McCabeThe Healthy Model Returns in American Fashion Mags
October 22, 2012
It’s almost asking too much, but it seems as if from the appearance of recent fashion editorials one of two things has happened:
1. Either someone has directed all fashion mags to go light on the photoshopping
or
2. There’s a directive that says curves (even if ever so slight in nature) are a-ok.
That definitely was not the case in runway collections this year. But it’s looking like that in fashion magazines. Case-in-point is this feature of Kate Upton in this month’s Vogue. They could have gone heavier on the photoshop (as they’ve done in the past), but that didn’t happen. I’d highlight where the curves are, but you can tell just by viewing.

The Meat Dress Returns in Corset Form
September 20, 2012
I’m late on this one, but had to re-blog. Lady Gaga’s infamous meat dress made a return, except this time in the form of a meat corset with matching meat boots. The meat corset consisted of the corset itself with matching meat thong (you read that right, now read it again). Somewhere someone at PETA has his/her eyes rolling in the back of their heads, foaming at the mouth and writhing on the floor in a seizure like convulsion.
Sidenote, is it me or has she gained some weight?
An Entire Collection/Show Dedicated To Denim?
September 7, 2012Merelda McKinnon looks at the DL1961 Spring/Summer 2013 collection and I had a chance to glance through the photos. It’s not easy to pull something like this off. Think about it, and entire fashion show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion week in New York dedicated to denim. It’s not the denim itself that’s the issue in my eyes. The issue is how many variations on a theme can really come out and be considered creative? Merelda says it happened before her very own eyes. And I concur. See the review here.
Esther McCabeTracy Reese uh… I mean Michelle Obama wows at the Democratic National Convention
September 5, 2012
You know where my priorities are when I am flipping through channels and catch Michelle Obama’s speech or rather her dress. Instead of going online and searching for the majority of things she talked about, I went online to find out where that stunning dress came from. Luckily my search hunger was satiated by the New York daily News who astutely noted that the dress was created by none other than Tracy Reese. In her 4 years as first last, Michelle Obama has single-handedly increased sales for a variety of designers by virtue of wearing their items. Here’s a retrospective of some of her most memorable dresses:
Inauguration day in Isabel Toledo dress:

In Jason Wu dress at Inaugural Ball:

In Thakoon Panichgul

In Azzedine Alaia

Will she get to do the same thing in the next 4 years? Anything’s possible.
Esther McCabeH&M Previews Autumn Trends
August 28, 2012H&M has put together a respectable guide to Autumn fashion in less than 1 minute and 50 seconds (it’s such a quick video with detail). Darker colors? Check. Metallics? Check. More masculine with feminine accent items? Check. And leather. You cannot forget the leather.
At this stage it’s ubiquitous. Much to the chagrin of PETA, it’s added as an accent piece on nearly everything.
Esther McCabeHeidi Merrick Unleashes Fall
August 23, 2012

If there’s one thing you get after seeing Heidi Merrick’s collection for Fall 2012 there’s at least one item that you’ll wear. There may be more, but it won’t take a whole lot of convincing. Just a quick glance at the recent images I viewed, I automatically gravitated toward look 4 and 5 in the first row, look 1, 6 and 9 in the second row and look 3 in the in third row. The prints take the collection in a different direction. Individually it’s tough to make an honest assessment without throwing in personal preference against because they’re just left of contemporary but not edgy enough to be some newfangled avant guarde styling. So basically that means, her Fall collection is strong with a personal caveat that stands against the prints.
Still, it’s hard to go negative on a designer with excellent energy (as demonstrated in video below) and a great eye for the female form.

Ashish in the Window at Colette
August 22, 2012
When you’re dominating the window at Colette, you know you’ve arrived (retail-wise). Creatively that could have happened 10 years ago, but retail is another ballgame altogether. Ashish’s collection is worthy of this honor though. View the full fall collection here.
Esther McCabeSending a Message Malandrino Style
September 8, 2011I received the Malandrino lookbook for resort styles sometime in July and I understand why the designer is so dynamic in the construction of evening dresses and gowns to an extent. But what’s really getting me ginned up is the rumblings of another incredible fashion week showing on the order of what was shown for last Spring. If you missed it, here’s the video I shot (the zoom function eluded me that day).
This time Malandrino may pull another rabbit out of her hat and wow us again. The show starts at 4pm EST today and we’ll try to get this new-fangled live blogging mechanism up and running.
