The obsession with NARS continues

Caraibe front

We have already established that I’m a pink lip gloss girl. As such, I generally stay away from peach shades. I have pale skin with pink undertones so most peaches look too orange or, well, peachy on me. No matter how natural they claim to be, they look far from natural on my lips.

And, when it came to NARS, I really thought that their lip gloss in Orgasm was going to be my true love for spring - a nice un-made-up nude. (Which I’m wearing this very day.)

Then I tried their new Lip Lacquer in Caraibe.

Caraibe top

In the pot, it looks a little bit like my f.y. eye … eyeshadow base from Benefit.

And it is touted as peachy.

So, I will admitt, I went in as a skeptic.

But I am really loving this sheer, shimmery color. My lips aren’t too pigmented, so this gives them a nice oomph of color without looking made up. (Though a review at Makeupalley.com also recommends the product for toning down highly pigmented lips. This review also suggests using a lip brush for application. I personally applied with my finger for the natural look. Applying with a brush did give a more defined peach shade, if that’s what you’re going for.)

Plus, given the wind and sand factor, this would be a better beach choice than the gloss because the texture is soft and non-sticky (when applied with fingers - with brush application there is a stick-factor). It really doesn’t look or feel like I’m wearing anything - but my lips have a pretty color and shimmer.

Pamper yourself and the planet

Aveda candle

Aveda is celebrating earth month with some deals that will do you and the environment some good.

Right now you can get a free refillable Color Conserve travel duo ($10 value) with the purchase of a liter each of Color Conserve shampoo and conditioner.

Also, buy their Light the Way candle and 100% of the proceeds help save endangered plants.

Learn more about what you can do for the planet for Earth Month and every month on their What You Can Do page.

As always, Aveda offers refillable bottles and encourages customers to buy liter sized bottles of their products. That way, you’re getting the same amount of product as if you bought two of the smaller sizes but using less packaging. (And money! It’s cheaper to “buy in bulk.”) You can even buy refillable lipstick cases! So cute!

Aveda is one of my favorite companies - I liked their products before I even discovered their committment to the environment. That was when I truly fell in love. (Okay, that, and the scent of their Shampure conditioner.)

(Free shipping today on orders $60 and more! Enter code EMFS36 at checkout.)

Eye makeover at Chanel

Chanel spring

Browsing around the local Chanel Counter, I was intrigued by the purples in their spring preview. Purple is a difficult eye color - what is meant to be sophisticated can turn clownish at the flick of a brush.

Starting with the Professional Eye Shadow Base in lilac, Melinda, sales assistant extraordinaire, brushed the shimmery liquid shadow from lash line almost to the browbone. It had a nice consistency and the brush made it easy to apply, with a little finger blending the base alone alone made for a pretty, pearly look.

Chanel shadow duo

But, it was the Silky Eyeshadow Duo in star dust that I had my eye on. Malinda applied the lighter, more shimmery shade on the inside third of my lid. Then, the darker shade went on in an inverted V, with the point centering on my crease. The look was definitely glam and non-clowny. For an evening look I think this would be great.

The base also really helped the shadow to stay put on my bare lids. I usually have a laborious eye shadow base process I go through before attempting the actual eye color, but even with out it this stuck. The base seemed to really adhere to my skin and the shadow clung to it well. The products were also very light-feeling, and my contacts weren’t bothered at all.

A+ for the big C.

Inquiring minds want to know …

… will I ever see my beloved discontinued lipstick shade again?

Well, the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Dawn Fallik answers your questions in her piece, “Cosmetics Loved and Lost.”

Most useful and print-and-save-worthy is the list of contact information for the “costmetic graveyards” of some of your favorite brands, as well as companies like Three Custom Color that will try to recreate your favorite.

I don’t know why so many people are attached to red lipstick, but they are - so best of luck finding or re-creating True Red.

A very tony tail

Tonytail

What’s the most popular bad hair day staple? The pony tail, of course.

But, no matter how many cute hair accessories you buy, if you’re like me you usually end up using a plain black elastic. It’s sort of a white flag of surrender, showing the world that you just gave up on your hair that morning.

But, today I discovered an easy way to posh up any pony - the Tonytail.

I have generally been leery of fake hair. I can’t justify the expense of getting it at the salon and I just don’t want to buy hair from a kiosk at the mall. So, the tonytail is a perfect baby step into the fake hair world.

It’s basically a band that is half typical snag-free elastic and half synthetic hair. So in the same quick motion you use at the gym you can have a more polished, work or event-worthy look.

My only complaint would be that for those with really thick hair, that third wrap around to insure a snug do is kind of difficult. But, the colors blend pretty well and look natural. I have found that both the light brown, and a combination of light brown and blonde match my hair pretty indiscernibly. I fooled my husband, anyway.
