Be Careful What you Wish for

Summer Dresses

I’ll get flamed for this but here goes:

I’m not a fan of the pouf, flirty summer dress and will explain in 100 words or less. It makes every woman walking down the street in Manhattan look as if they are pregnant. Mind you I’ve been wishing for something to de-denimize the female populace of New York City, but the old adage be careful what you wish for has never been more appropriate than in this particular case.

For some reason, it seems as if these type of dresses don’t appreciate the shape of someone who just worked out over the winter with their personal trainer fighting to lose every last inch of fat-pound. While these gripes might be petty, small and pedestrian, they are real… to me at least. A quick example of this is the 7 designer pieces pictured in Ellen Tien’s “A Weekend Retreat” piece for the New York Times. While all 7 are beautiful pieces and allows women to loosen that vice grip on slinky denim for the summer (denim that was all the rage last summer, and the summer before that, and the summer before that summer…I go on and digress), I still feel as if something more in the vein of Kate and Kass is the way to go, if I had to pick from the photo, the second from the left works well and the third from the right works even better. But why pick from the photo in the first place, why not just abandon the pouf dress madness?

Flame on.

We are robots.

Anya Hindmarch...not

We are robots. We are drones. We are all the things we say we are not. That might sound like the beginning of bad poetry but I can think of something way worse. How about the fact that every blogger and their third cousin (twice removed) seems content to drone on about the Anya Hindmarch I am not a plastic bag, bag? “Oh it’s so fabulous, Oh it’s so dreamy. It’s so kitsch, wah…wah..yadda…yadda…blah…blah.” Eff off.

I’m way more content with anyone willing to wear the I’m Not a Smug Twat bag, I hope Marissa Vanderzee is taking orders for this one.

Thursday Evening Update (10:19pm EST): Annnddd… yes she is. Order your “I’m Not a Smug Twat” bag right over here.

Ok.. we get it

Dov Charney

I can’t remember where, when and how so I will start with “awhile back.” Awhile back the CEO/amateur photographer of American Apparel said that he wasn’t interested in photographing young-looking women so that it would be borderline kiddie porn. What he was really interested in doing was pushing the envelope and making beautiful ads. Yes, the CEO shot some of the ads himself. And I am dying to show link to the quote. So take the paraphrase for granted. We Americans are a little too stiff for CEO Dov Charney, so when American Apparel wanted to debut the ads they really wanted to put out, what did they do? They did what Carine Roitfeld has said gives French Vogue a leg up creatively on American Vogue, they showed tits. But that would be way too simple. So Charney I am guessing decided it would be ok to show someone who looks underage kinda, sorta naked.

Where am I going with this?

I love and hate American Apparel ads. But this one, I am thinking kinda, sorta goes from cute kitsch to way beyond tacky. My take on it is, alirght, we get it, you’re doing the whole 70s, quasi-porn, drug-induced, exploitative lifestyle thing. Thank you, can we move on?

Growing Up Marc Style

Dakota Fanning

The Dakota Fanning for Marc Jacobs ads have been floating around for some time, but I’m afraid I still don’t know how to react. On the one hand, I’m painfully disgusted — pseudo-fashion icon before you hit puberty? seriously? — maybe a little bit jealous, and also completely (yet quite mysteriously) intrigued.

Kate Moss taking over Ebay

Kate Moss

It’s official, at approximately 8:45am this morning, the fashion world lost it’s collective mind. Ok the time is just some random, arbitrary thing that I put out, but it’s not far from the truth minus the fact that it may have lost it’s mind a long time ago. My reasoning is very clear, Kate Moss’ line released at Top Shop caused near riots at the store and now she’s made her way on to Ebay. The bidding is not necessarily fast and furious and the premiums on the item are what you would expect for Ebay it’s still a wonder how she is now an uber designer in terms of buzz. In other news, emerging designers who studied years in school are banging their heads against walls. Film at eleven.

Papierdoll July 2008 Interview

Interview: Thomas Voorn
Sonia Pereira Murphy

Considering the now ubiquitous trend of disposable fashion where all that seems to matter is a cute factor, Thomas Voorn's intellectual take on clothing is not only refreshing, but enlightening. Voorn's fascination with clothing calls to mind an anthropologist intrigued with skeletal remains, a sociologist... [Go]
