Wonderbra Commercial Circa 1979

Ahh 1979, Jimmy Carter was president, New York had just had a blackout 2 years earlier, oil prices were sky high and people had to wait in line to get gas on different days. Times were much simplerthen. That’s especially the case when looking back at this Wonder Bra commercial. It changed lives back in 1979 and is still doing the same now. Incidentally, I was gestating in my mother’s womb around that time waiting to be foisted on the world a couple of months later in 1980.

Carolina Retro

Carolina HererraThe editors at Papierdoll are all about retro. They long for the days of Diana Vreeland, Pirelli Calendar girls and having a first lady with style. So upon stumbling on a tiny retrospective on Style.com of Carolina Hererra it was impossible not to point out one particular photo. It slightly scares us because we’re not getting any younger and younger folks seem to be doing just that. The only exception to that rule is Demi Moore but there’s a rumor going around that she harvests the skin of the young is some sort of skin cellar in Idaho, though you may have to take that ghastly rumor with a grain of salt. The photo in question in the Style retrospective is of Carolina Herrera and Mick Jagger (yes he was young at one point). The great thing is that upon first inspection you can really tell if it really truly is Mick. Then you’ll look at the lips and can come to no other conclusion. That is Jagger in all his glory with a young Carolina. What’s particularly interesting is the fact that Herrera will rightly receive the Geoffrey Beene award in June from the CFDA.

We’re happy for Herrera and can’t get over the fact that Mick Jagger was once young.

Journelle NYC

Journelle

Stopped into Journelle NYC a couple of days ago to take a look around the store and kick its proverbial tires. It is a new store catering to high end lingerie. I’m talking Aubade (my favorite) cosabella, araks, and huit. New York was screaming for this type of store and someone apparently listened. Bring your wallet, checkbook and a home equity line of credit as high end lingerie tends to add up. Hopefully they open an online store as well; even though my feeling tells me otherwise. I’m sure if you called and asked for something that you really wanted, I don’t think they would be averse to shipping it, after all, we’re not communists.

Model Obsession

Models

Magazines were my obsession as a child- back home there are probably still stacks of 89-94 issues of Vogue and Bazaar under my bed. The shoots and covers that mesmerized me eclectic looking models in extravagant poses wearing the most up to date fashions. Here recently it seems like the industry-meaning beauty, fashion, and designer ads have opted for celebrity as opposed to models. Once upon a time models became the celebrity based on on how many covers or runways they graced. Now you can’t find a model on the traditional high fashion magazine or beauty commercial. There are plenty of models starving (literally) to be picked I’d prefer to buy lip-gloss based on that girl rather than Rhianna or Penelope Cruz. Our celeb obsessed society should welcome back the model or at least that’s what I think….

Papierdoll July 2008 Interview

Interview: Thomas Voorn
Sonia Pereira Murphy

Considering the now ubiquitous trend of disposable fashion where all that seems to matter is a cute factor, Thomas Voorn's intellectual take on clothing is not only refreshing, but enlightening. Voorn's fascination with clothing calls to mind an anthropologist intrigued with skeletal remains, a sociologist... [Go]
