Gwyneth and Fashion and Film All in One

Gwyneth Paltrow

As if starring in one of the year’s biggest films is not enough, Gwyneth Paltrow decided it would be cute to upend Sarah Jessica Parker just a little bit by starring in her own fashion film. This one is set to be released just before Sex and the City. Although try as this blog might to put some sort of coorelation to the Paltrow’s 4 minute film for Tod’s and Sarah Jessica Parker’s major release, there really is none. It’s just one big coincidence. The film directed by Dennis Hopper is making it’s debut at Cannes and then going straight to the Tod’s website.

On a side note, it would really be cool if Paltrow was indeed in some sort of fashion related flick. Her affinity for sky high heels is just one of the many reasons why she rocks.

Chanel goes Tautou

Get used to no longer seeing Nicole in ads like this for Chanel. She was dumped for the cuter in a french sorta way Audrey Tautou. Remember Audrey as Amelie…in Amelie? Apparently Chanel went for the younger, less pregnant and more French actress. In the wild and wacky world of fashion advertising and branding, it somehow makes sense that Tautou fits the mold of Chanel. She has a sort of retro visage, while resembling Madame Coco, if only slightly. This changing of the Chanel guard happens in 2009 and there’s some excitement in regards to her fronting the campaign specifically because she will be working on a commercial that was also directed by her Amelie director Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

Greatest Fashion Entrepreneurs

Ralph LaurenSurely Success Magazine’s list of greatest fashion entrepreneurs is missing a name or two. The three top fashion entrepreneurs according to the magazine include Ralph Lauren (but of course), Levi Strauss (ok two for two), and Phil Knight (hold them there horses). Knight may have created the top athletic brand in Nike, but it was arguably as a result of creative, successful marketing than being so utterly fashionable. For athletic wear that’s fashionable all one has to do is look at Puma. So to really get to the bottom of things, Knight is more at home being the successful marketing entrepreneur/guy than fashion.

While Success did not solicit for additions here are a couple of names they may be missing altogether: Coco Chanel (helped build sprawling fashion empire), Louis Vuitton (see Coco Chanel), Rene Lacoste (who bridged the athletic/fashion gap)… the list goes on and there’s sure to be hand wringing over any that was missed here.

Sex and the City Watch: Day 99

Sex and the City

No there is no real Sex and the City Watch going on, but there might as well be all things considered. This movie is getting more buzz than The Devil Wears Prada. It’s not hard to see why as every sort of minutiae is being thrown in from what the characters eat, to the actual wedding scenes (that wasn’t a spoiler), to the designers being used. In this vein The LA Times blog looks at Pat Fields magician-like precision when it comes to striking the tone between the Carrie Bradshaw that was and the Carrie Bradshaw that is now. She looks at the character several years later and her fashion tastes have not so much grown as she as evolved”. Fields is quoted as saying,

“I saw Carrie a little more sexy, a little more evolved, a little more calm with herself as a woman, she was still going through her eclectic things, and she was gaining in her profession.”

The movie comes out at the end of May. To read more of the fashion production notes visit the LA Times blog here.

Where are They Going?

Michael Kors

Here’s a random question for you. Since the advent of the fashion photo shoot, designers have been in love with the whole airplane-runway to black car theme. The question is, what message are they trying to convey with the whole going somewhere theme? A recent ad that got this question to come up is Michael Kors’ campaign for his signature perfume line. Again we see a beautiful woman apparently just exiting a plane and going directly to her waiting car. While we can smell the perfume, we just know she’s wearing Michael Kors. How could she not be? She is a trendsetter jumping from one locale to another and if she’s going to wear a perfume that enables her to do this sort of thing, it must be Kors.

And while Michael is not the only one who does this sort of jet setting ad it is the most recent example. Granted there’s nothing wrong with it, you just have to wonder the point of it all. Wouldn’t it be much simpler to have a photo of the bottle against a white background? If you like anything Michael Kors, surely you will love his perfume whether on a runway or a white background? Right?
