Chanel goes Tautou

Get used to no longer seeing Nicole in ads like this for Chanel. She was dumped for the cuter in a french sorta way Audrey Tautou. Remember Audrey as Amelie…in Amelie? Apparently Chanel went for the younger, less pregnant and more French actress. In the wild and wacky world of fashion advertising and branding, it somehow makes sense that Tautou fits the mold of Chanel. She has a sort of retro visage, while resembling Madame Coco, if only slightly. This changing of the Chanel guard happens in 2009 and there’s some excitement in regards to her fronting the campaign specifically because she will be working on a commercial that was also directed by her Amelie director Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

Where are They Going?

Michael Kors

Here’s a random question for you. Since the advent of the fashion photo shoot, designers have been in love with the whole airplane-runway to black car theme. The question is, what message are they trying to convey with the whole going somewhere theme? A recent ad that got this question to come up is Michael Kors’ campaign for his signature perfume line. Again we see a beautiful woman apparently just exiting a plane and going directly to her waiting car. While we can smell the perfume, we just know she’s wearing Michael Kors. How could she not be? She is a trendsetter jumping from one locale to another and if she’s going to wear a perfume that enables her to do this sort of thing, it must be Kors.

And while Michael is not the only one who does this sort of jet setting ad it is the most recent example. Granted there’s nothing wrong with it, you just have to wonder the point of it all. Wouldn’t it be much simpler to have a photo of the bottle against a white background? If you like anything Michael Kors, surely you will love his perfume whether on a runway or a white background? Right?

Just call him Sex from now on

David Beckham

David Beckham is a man who should legally change his name to Sex. Some here in the office don’t understand his allure, but the vast majority get it. He states that he was “quite uncomfortable” posing for the Emporio Armani ads (and yes girls, that ALL him). A guy like Kevin Davitian should be quite uncomfortable in a Emporio Armani ad. Beckham needs to come to terms with the fact that everyone needs to see him in all manner of designer underwear at all times.

BCBG Ad

BCBG

We’re going to be talking about New York Magazine’s Look fashion week magazine in-depth on Friday and next week because it was particularly good and definitely something you should pick up. There was a BCBG ad in the magazine. While not particularly earth-shattering, it was definitely beautifully executed. Red heads are not used enough in fashion ads and simply on first inspection the ad serves its purpose, the shoes are absolutely necessary.

Wonderbra Commercial Circa 1979

Ahh 1979, Jimmy Carter was president, New York had just had a blackout 2 years earlier, oil prices were sky high and people had to wait in line to get gas on different days. Times were much simplerthen. That’s especially the case when looking back at this Wonder Bra commercial. It changed lives back in 1979 and is still doing the same now. Incidentally, I was gestating in my mother’s womb around that time waiting to be foisted on the world a couple of months later in 1980.
