It’s no secret that there’s a personal obsession for some when it pertains to Motown and the fashions that groups like The Supremes, Marvelettes and other wore. It was arguably a simpler time even though many of you reading this were probably not even thoughts in your parents minds. My parents were in Puerto Rico doing god knows what. So when news came of Mary Wilson (of the Supremes) is holding an exhibit at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum that looks back at that time, a lot of folks here cheered. The exhibit consists mainly of her personal costumes from the Supreme days. It includes all the flowing gowns, the glamour, the retrospective aspect. She tells the Times Online about the exhibit saying:
We used to make our clothes from patterns from the five-and-dime store. When we had our first hit, we bought gowns from stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue. When we did the really big TV shows, they had designers. They would make things for us, many of which you will see at the V&A exhibition.
One of my favourite dresses was the butterfly one. It is sequined, with a chiffon cape attached to the shoulders and arms - when you lifted your arms, it looked like wings.

Superheroes at the Met

You can truly say you’ve seen it all once you’re at the MET and the fashion exhibit is about superheroes or rather what one can become wearing fashions that inspire. That is the gist of the Superheroes exhibit curated by Andrew Bolton. The Costume Institute Gala (you know, the party that you’re not invited to, and every a-lister attends while looking incredibly fabulous) was last night and helped kick off the exhibit.
For the comic nerds out there the exhibit is an orgasmic orgy of superhero costumes mixed in with fashion designer’s leaps of fancy. When you give someone like Gareth Pugh the ability to take dramatic license you know you’re going to get something special. Superhero costumes featured include Ironman’s iron suit, Christian Bale’s suit from The Dark Knight and a host of other pieces. You have to really, thoroughly enjoy stuff like this. Curator Andrew Bolton summed up the exhibition like this:
“At the heart of the superhero are issues about the body, identity and transformation, which are, of course, critical to fashion. Fashion is transcendent and transforming - you can become anybody or anything through fashion.”

The Sex Drink

The Sex in the City ads are effing everywhere. It is inescapable. There’s absolutely no way you can hide from it. They are now forever part of the fashion ethos online. The same folks that went to see Devil Wears Prada will be dragging their boyfriends to see Sex in the City and ogling some male character. Last time it was Adrian Grenier, this time it may possibly be a tossup between Chris Noth and that guy who plays Smith… What’s his name again?
Vitamin Water is apparently passionate about Sex in the City as well. To that end they have teamed up with the HBO for some sort of Sex in the City promotion. The interesting thing is they are giving a lucky winner the chance to fly to New York and attend the premiere. Imagine rubbing elbows with SJP and Mathew Broderick in tow…Are you swooning yet? Go Brooklyn

It’s no secret that Papierdoll is based out of Brooklyn. We love the boro because once you get out of Manhattan it’s nothing but open roads and cheaper Chinese food. Many people think that Chinese food has its origins in San Francisco, Beijing, or Manhattan’s Chinatown but the process of creating Chinese food actually started at Yen Yen in Kensington Brooklyn (that’s the story that we’re sticking to). They make the best mooshoo, chicken in garlic sauce (brown rice of course), scallion pancakes and lo mein. This post is losing direction, so let’s refocus. Somehow someway the folks at Louis Vuitton found out about the boro via Takashi Murakami and started selling real Louis Vuitton bags kind of how the fake ones are sold, you know on the fold out tables in front of venues. Marc Jacobs managed to cross the Brooklyn Bridge and remarked that he:
“never bought a fake anything, not a fake tooth, a fake suit or a fake Coca-Cola, I am 100 percent real.”
Others at the event include Kanye West, Eva Herzigova, Julien Schnabel, Kristin Davis and many others. Somehow they managed to keep all the “street people” who naturally inhabit the fringes of Brooklyn, don’t worry Bloomberg has two more years in office, it’s only a matter of time before the real upper class hit Williamsburg, hipsters you’ve been warned. Till then here are some photos from the event and I’ll be posting my snapshots later today. Btw, for anyone who is interested in the exhibit, it is set to run from April 5 to July 13, 2008.
