Hong Kong Fashion Week on iPapier

Hong Kong Fashion Week

Today we launch a new fashion blog. (we actually launched the pre-beta version last week) It covers a lot of the fashion that we simply don’t have the space to cover here on Papierblog. A lot goes on here in the states and it’s hard to cram that into one blog. So we launch iPapier. iPapier covers everything outside of the states in fashion that we’re dying to know about. Most of it is in English, but you may find a French post in there every now and again as it is our co-founder’s native tongue. You’ll find coverage of street fashion, random musings and fashion weeks that may not be in the main stream (meaning Paris, London, Milan) but are becoming ever more relevant.

We start coverage this week with Hong Kong Fashion week and get rolling on Amsterdam and Berlin fashion week, next week. Editors Tenisha Anderson and Marquita Harris bring you all the words and descriptions while photographer Anne-Marie Michel and her team brings us back photos at the various fashion weeks and on the streets. Bookmark it (http://ipapier.papierdoll.net) and wish us luck!

Ralph in Russia

Ralph Lauren

In recent years the city of Moscow and Russia in general, has left behind the drab looks of gray everything and breadlines and has become a hub for fashion. With a nascent capitalism and a new fashion conscious society, Russia has introduced a fashion week and countless high-end stores. One of the latest Moscow additions is Ralph Lauren. WWD reports this morning that Lauren is opening a major store in Moscow to head off the bootleggers (ok, I added that last part). The designer known for classic American style launches twin stores in Moscow tomorrow- gone are the days of smuggling Levi’s.

Explaining why he took so long and why he is finally ready to enter the market Lauren tell WWD:”

When they asked me to come here years ago, I felt that I wasn’t ready for Russia with the clothes that I make,” explained Lauren, dressed head to toe in black with a gold Rolex on his wrist. “I think they get it now. Russian people have a history of a lot of elegance and a lot of class. This is an old-world country. So it’s in the blood somewhere.”

block-party-invite.jpg

Okay, so you’ve got your nights figured out, but what are you going to do all day Saturday? Recover from the night before, do some laundry, and watch an America’s Next Top Model marathon? Or learn to D.J., take your t-shirt from cast-off to on-trend, and design your own jewerly? Check out C.O. Bigelow and GenArt’s blog party on Greenwich Avenue between Christopher and 10th Street from 2 to 5 p.m. this Saturday. In addition to all the cool eats and activities, there’s family stuff and prizes all to benefit the Children’s Museum of the Arts. Go ahead, become the new MisShapes and help shape children’s lives at the same time.

Fashion Indie and Restaurants Against Hunger

Restaurants against hunger

** update 2:35pm (we have a couple of extra tickets send an e-mail to Michelle@papierdoll.net, and you may get one for free no less)

As if we needed a reason to hobnob with celebrities. One of our bookmarked sites, Fashion Indie, is co-sponsoring an event entitled Restaurants Against Hunger. They recently held fashion shows at 4 major restaurants in New York to the delight of several restaurant patrons (where else but New York can you get lasagna and a 6 foot model walking down a makeshift runway?).

Tomorrow night, they are holding an event with tons of celebrities and guests to bring awareness to this ongoing problem. In New York City alone when last they did a homeless census count, they found over 2,000 people living in the streets without food or proper clothing. This is a very worthy cause.

The Papierdoll team will be out at this event (we purchased our tickets) and there are still some available. Head over there now.

Papierdoll July 2008 Interview

Interview: Thomas Voorn
Sonia Pereira Murphy

Considering the now ubiquitous trend of disposable fashion where all that seems to matter is a cute factor, Thomas Voorn's intellectual take on clothing is not only refreshing, but enlightening. Voorn's fascination with clothing calls to mind an anthropologist intrigued with skeletal remains, a sociologist... [Go]
