In deep doo doo

One has to wonder what exactly is going on in the fashion world. All of a sudden there’s an assortment of criminals, low-lives and degenerates roaming the runways. Is the vile underbelly of the industry finally being exposed? Am I being too dramatic? Don’t believe me? Tired of these random questions? Check this list out:

Anand Alexander
Anand Jon Alexander: Designer who was recently charged with forcible rape, lewd acts on a child and other felony counts. Alexander has dressed Paris Hilton (no surprise here) Michelle Rodriguez and Mary J. Blige.

Naomi Campbell: Where to really begin? She been accused multiple times of beating the help. Her most recent run-in with the law includes beating her maid with her diamond encrusted cell phone. She’s currently doing a stint this week at the Sanitation department’s community service facilities. (As an aside, how must you feel if you are a sanitation worker who’s regular 9 to 5 is the same job that Naomi Campbell and others are given as punishment?)

Kate Moss
Kate Moss: Where to begin part 2? Notorious for being on all types of illegal substances, was caught doing lines in a studio on camera. The comeback kid though has turned it around with covers on W and a first time ever interview with British Vogue. Sometimes besides being a model, crime does pay.

Peter Braunstein: Who? Forrmer WWD writer Peter Braunstein that’s who. Charged with posing as a fireman (it was Halloween), setting off an alarm then raping someone in her apartment, Braunstein led police officers on a chase across several states when he was finally nabbed on a college campus. The now dubbed “Halloween rapist” is serving hard time for his misdeeds.

I’m sure there’s more…

I was Bitten by Sarah Jessica

A couple of questions. You can read about the line everywhere , they do a backstory on Sarah Jessica Parker, they talk about how she wears everything from Temperley London to Alexander McQueen and oh the heels from Sex and the City. But where are the photos? Let’s see what it looks like.

I am especially intrigued because the pricepoints ($19.98 and less) are for everybody and it makes it’s debut and is exclusive at… Steve and Barry’s.

So… let’s see it.

Breathing Down Her Neck

I really hope Ms. Roitfield is not putting the idea to rest that one day she may want to do American Vogue once the headmistress decides to pass on the crown (read from that any way you want).

‘I have more fun doing my magazine. We French, we small! We can smoke on the cover, we can show tits, we can do crazy calendar; we have a lot of freedom that they don’t have in America. I think I would be very frustrated not to be able to do all my craziness that I’m able to do here in France.’

Show tits indeed.

The Patricia Fields/Payless/H&M/Target Question

Patricia Fields

“But their shoes are so ugly,” said an editor at Papierdoll. Not any more apparently. I looked at the news of Patricia Fields coming to Payless in two ways coincidentally.

a. The trickle of high end designers creating for big box retailers and certain speciality retailers (H&M/Payless) is starting to turn into a flood. I see it as similar to a high brow actor cashing in on a movie that appeals to the masses.

b. I wonder - and I guess this is an open question - if designing for these retailers diminishes the designer’s standing in regards to the upper crust, high end customers, aspirational buyers? I still covet Stella McCartney’s ENTIRE line after the H&M showing. I may actually covet it more as a result of her selling at H&M.

Forthe & Down

Forth & TowneIt’s not like I didn’t see this coming. I fear for the future of Banana as well. Walked in yesterday and said to myself, “where are all the clothes I used to want?” And though I wasn’t Forth and Towne’s target customer, you have to wonder if there will be a Gap in the coming years with all the bad news.

Papierdoll July 2008 Interview

Interview: Thomas Voorn
Sonia Pereira Murphy

Considering the now ubiquitous trend of disposable fashion where all that seems to matter is a cute factor, Thomas Voorn's intellectual take on clothing is not only refreshing, but enlightening. Voorn's fascination with clothing calls to mind an anthropologist intrigued with skeletal remains, a sociologist... [Go]
