Dear God No…The Bow

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008 | trendspotting | 1 Comment

Bow ties

I read an article in the Sydney Morning Herald the jibes with what has recently been seen in photoshoots and retail runway shows. The bow tie as an accessory for women’s fashion is making some sort of raging comeback. While the trends are simply too difficult to be ignored, this is one in which I’d rather pass. Rachel Wells goes into detail regarding the various permutations of bow tie fashion, but I tell you ignore the hype, get away, get away. Here’s the reasoning:

Large bow ties have always been a “look at me” fashion apparatus. While some of it can be done in interesting and intelligent ways, what happens with a trend like this is the same thing that happened with the gladiator sandals. A rarely seen occurrence becomes the de facto standard and it loses its luster quickly. Some things are timeless. The small bow tie is one of those things that never loses its appeal. The oversized ones conjure up images of Mickey Mouse and Hustler strippers, mutually exclusive of each other of course.

If you must insist, Wells’ column is over here for reading (not for wearing).

Fall According to Nordstrom

Monday, July 21st, 2008 | trendspotting | 3 Comments

NordstromIt’s always interesting to find out what actually will bee out and about during the Fall. You have to understand first of all that what we see on the runways are not usually what ends up on our person. A good percentage of the time, you will only see what buyers think are going to be the next big thing. You may even find yourself wondering where that Balenciaga coat went if it’s not a popular item with buyers. This makes the retailer preview shows all the more important. Short of going to the designers themselves and asking for a specially made piece, your only bet in getting exactly what you want from the runways is actually taking a look at the retailer shows.

Nordstrom’s held just such an event and a personal favorite from the Vera Wang came down the runway that had me delighted. I will actually be able to buy this dress that has been a coveted want since February. It’s just so darned intricately wonderful. Donna Kato of the San Jose Mercury news went through all the items that Nordstrom showed off this season and the buyers hit their mark. Several runway favorites are coming this August/September including pieces from Stella McCartney, Derek Lam, Missoni, Valentino, Michael Kors, Bill Blass, Peter Som, Burberry Prorsum.

There are tons of reasons to look forward to fall. Read the entire article here.

A Girl’s New Best Friend

Pearls

If we had a feature called picture of the day, this would be the picture of the day for Monday. It comes to use from the Times UK and is simply way too beautiful for just a meandering glance. The main thrust is the huge rope chain pearls. You know that passe’ thing called diamonds that are supposed to be a girls best friend? Well pearls are the new diamond. The bigger (similar to huge handbags) the better. There is such a thing as too big, but all in all, we’re happy getting a nice set of pearls for the summer and possibly early Fall.

Tony and Maria via Marc Jacobs

Papierdoll Recommends:

Marc JacobsMarc Jacobs

If Marc Jacobs’ intention is re-purposing West Side Story in these kitten heels, his job is more than accomplished. While everyone is going for the uncomfortably high skyscraper heels that take about a month to break in (ask Mrs. Paltrow-Martin), Jacobs has decidedly gone in a different direction for the retail folks. Witness a recent trip to the Eluxury online store and the finding of several lower heeled variants. It’s not as if the medieval shoe craze: buckled 6-inch t-strapped pumps, patent booties and bootie-mules are going to go away, but there’s hope in Jacobs jaunt to comfortably stylish shoe world.

Fashion + Tennis Anyone?

Monday, July 7th, 2008 | WhatTheySay, trendspotting | 1 Comment

The aristocratic soul of Wimbledon makes fashion statements ever the norm, but moreso the case this year apparently. Everyone from Nadal to Serena to Federer walked a court that seemed more runway inspired than tennis inspired. Oh sure, they could play tennis in what they were wearing, but the multiple ways to cover Wimbledon from a journalistic perspective included glossing over what the athletes were wearing. Sometimes that coverage came at the expense of covering what everyone was there for in the first place: the actual competition.

Tennis Fashion

But that’s not a complaint anyone on this side would have because, hey, we’re a fashion blog and we like it that way. So who was talking about the fashion at Wimbledon? The better question would be, who wasn’t? The LA Times went there late last week. The Independent went on a bit of a sexist bent. Finally the guardian chimes in with what it calls, fashion wars.
