The New York Daily News published a list of the top Vogue models of 2012. Not many surprises here as they selected models we’ve seen in Vogue this past year and in previous years. Some of the faces include Karlie Kloss, Arizona Muse, Toni Garrn, Kati Nescher, Isabeli Fontana and Joan Smalls. You can see the full list by clicking here. Spoiler note: Karlie Kloss was named most popular Vogue model of 2012.

Was able to log on to the new Intermix shopping site today and was thoroughly impressed. The brand has put together a bunch of great features. On the whole we’re not breaking new ground here, but the site makes it oh so much easier to shop than in the past, and is comparable to other industry leaders. You have a nice tool kit that follows you wherever you go on the site (floating on the right side of the page). You can immediately see what’s in your shopping bag by moving the mouse over the bag icon and you can easily log into your account. Not bad. What’s the selection like you ask? Same great Intermix selection of items. The homepage on first visit had a Helmut Lang blazer and a bunch of other items easily added to my virtual online shopping bag. If there were any real complaints they were minor. As an online shopper I’m accustomed to sections that drop me right into a selection of items. Intermix elegantly breaks down the number of items you can select from a master hierarchy of items: tops are subdivided into blouses, sweaters, tees and a weird section called “Night Out”.
I’m late on this one, but had to re-blog. Lady Gaga’s infamous meat dress made a return, except this time in the form of a meat corset with matching meat boots. The meat corset consisted of the corset itself with matching meat thong (you read that right, now read it again). Somewhere someone at PETA has his/her eyes rolling in the back of their heads, foaming at the mouth and writhing on the floor in a seizure like convulsion. Sidenote, is it me or has she gained some weight?

Instead of going online and searching for the majority of things she talked about, I went online to find out where that stunning dress came from. Luckily my search hunger was satiated by the New York daily News who astutely noted that the dress was created by none other than Tracy Reese. In her 4 years as first last, Michelle Obama has single-handedly increased sales for a variety of designers by virtue of wearing their items. Here’s a retrospective of some of her most memorable dresses: Inauguration day in Isabel Toledo dress: In Jason Wu dress at Inaugural Ball: In Thakoon Panichgul In Azzedine Alaia Will she get to do the same thing in the next 4 years?
It’s hard to miss designer Michael Angel’s Fall 2012 collection. Filled with strong forceful prints, even more rigid lines, a mastery of color selection and an attention to detail nearly unparalleled in fashion. We saw this in the Spring 2012 collection and this is more so the case in the Fall 2012 collection. An evolution of sorts, Michael Angel went from sirens-loud in Spring, to muted attention-getting in the Fall. Every color, every detail is intelligently placed with rhyme and reason outlined but not overstated. You know why the jacket below is cut just above the waist, it works well and is effortless on the female form. It’s exacting to the millimeter. The trousers provide just enough room to be loose in the right place (just above the knee and straight through the calf) without being outlandishly big. The shoulder-less dress is sexy just enough, but also serious. It’s adult without being boring. There’s anticipation for a Spring 2013 collection and the hope is it continues this designer’s evolution. What’s next is unpredictable, but more than welcome.

Someone’s thought of this before I’m sure, but no one’s actually gone on the record to propose this until now. Patrice L. Howard is being met with indifference, skepticism and even ridicule in some circles, but I feel she may be onto something. This intrepid fashion inventor has come up with an ingenious way to accessorize an accessory. Imagine if you will, a high heel shoe that has interchangeable heels. Change the heel you say? Ridiculous! Yes, but what if you want a red heel with your black pump or a brown heel with your open toe heel? You’d have to buy an altogether new shoe right? Wrong. Howard’s system allows you to safely fasten a new heel to the shoe, thus changing the appearance of the shoe and the shoe itself! Ever break a heel on a subway grating? Change the heel. Quite ingenious really. Ever the scientist, I took a look at Patrice’s shoe design and yes the shape of the shoe will have to remain the same at all times (you can’t -in theory- make a flat out of a heel). She has a video on Youtube demonstrating how the system would work and it looks quite [...]

Is it possibly because you’ve seen various nudes of Kim Kardashian already on websites that claim to have pictures of her? This time W Magazine went all Hugh Hefner on us and scooped the real thing, tastefully, of course. Normally it’s easy to dismiss this as a puff piece on Kardashian. W flips the script once again though and gives us Kim Kardashian uncensored (visually and in words), matter-of-factly telling us she dances on tables for the camera and when the camera goes off she’s back to normal. She also . Kardashian is presented as the anti-Paris Hilton of sorts in this interview and to a certain extent she is; minus the sex-tape, high paid party appearances, reality shows and beaver shots coming out of exotic cars…Hey wait a minute W!! You pulled a fast one on us. She’s not Paris Hilton, She’s Paris Hilton 3.0 or something.
V Magazine is quickly proving to be one of the top fashion mags in the biz (along with Interview Magazine, moreso indirectly). This month’s issue is a shot across the bow of other magazines primarily because the reigning queen (and king if you are to believe some salacious rumors) of Facebook is splashed all across the pages of V Magazine wearing Lady Liberty’s clothing. Lady Gaga went into the Statue of Liberty’s closet and stole her look for what would appear to be a pretty penny. Decked out in the latest in couture, Lady Gaga is accompanied by none other than fashion wunderkind himself Marc Jacobs. He’s pushing her in a cart he’s admiring her from a far, he’s suited up to go wherever a designer like Marc Jacobs would take a celebrity like Lady Gaga. Ok I’ll say a couple of words only because as a blogger I am afforded the luxury of speaking my mind when it is ok to do so (meaning all the time). I watch HSN from time to time and it’s a grab bag of cash for the designers. It really is. Here’s what happens. You go on HSN, you sell your stuff to middle America, make tons of case, then rinse, lather, repeat. So Patricia Fields has been on a tear recently, selling anything to HSN that’s not bolted down. The initial question was, is this in fact the same collection as what she’s selling in her store? It looks to be the case. While the HSN collection does seem a bit toned down (there’s only so much innovation Kansas can deal with), this other collection is just out there in a Patricia Fields type of way. I’m talking heavy on the use of polka dots, lots of bright colors and asymmetrical everything. It’s almost doesn’t make sense, but this is fashion, so sense sometimes takes a back seat to creativity. more so than that, it’s Patricia Fields and [...]

We published a news story early this morning that looked at the increase in sales at Burberry, particularly in the US. While my esteemed colleague and counterpart Meghan went through numbers and all the boring details explaining how Burberry managed to increase sales in the US, I have the luxury of looking qualitatively at how they pulled off the feat. Quite simply, Christopher Bailey is a genius. He’s not reinventing the wheel over at Burberry creating outlandish pieces that serve little purpose from season to season. What you have at Burberry is quite simply a never ending story of fashion that works not from season to season, but overall. You’re literally talking about wearing a trench from 10 years ago that works even with today’s fashion. Which leads to the thought that whatever is timeless in fashion can and will continue to sell. The article notes that sales have increased across the board (with the exception of Spain), and so naturally there’s more than just the timeless quality of Bailey’s work. There’s marketing, distribution and all that other stuff that cooks within the success recipe. So in this sense cause really does = effect. Timeless clothing means higher sales.
News broke on Saturday that model Ruslana Korshunova died in an apparent suicide on Saturday afternoon. While working for Papierdoll during fashion week, I’ve met several models and interviewed a handful. What I’ve found is a general politeness that you may not find with PR folks and at times self-important designers. Models are a different beast altogether. They run the gamut but I rarely meet one that’s too important to be nice, even if it’s on an exterior level. The thing is, with the recent deaths either from anorexia, drugs or in this case suicide, there’s something going on. Maybe gleaning too much from an isolated incident can be a problematic endeavor. That would be true if this was indeed an isolated incident. Models can make a lot of money or fall into the category of most that work “for the experience” and end up never getting paid. They are subject to long hours and at times abusive situations. Not a whole lot can be inferred without all the information on Korshunova’s unfortunate death. After the inquiries and investigations though, it would make sense if at the very least, the agencies that represent these models provided the same benefits and [...]

God Bless the Wall Street Journal for highlighting my next new job if this blogging thing turns out to be some sort of fad. Alina Dizik has an article today in the Wall Street Journal looking at a job that will have most women who shop swooning. Imagine getting a therapeutic massage everyday. That’s the great news about being a buyer, but a fellow Papierdoller who used to be a buyer tells me the downsides as well. Not everything is roses when you have to function as a person responsible for the direct success of a company. For example let’s say you are a buyer at store X and you end up buying what you think is going to be the next big thing in fashion (sneakers with heels for instance). Let’s say that the idea gets no traction, you may end up costing the company millions of dollars. It’s a crude but effective example of the pitfalls. Still, Dizik’s article points out some great perks of being a buyer: 1. Shopping (a lot of your job is taken up in this department) 2. Traveling (sometimes you have to go to where the designers are ) 3. High Salary ( [...]

There’s no room for being pretentious here, Vanessa Hudgens “Sneakernight” song is just way too catchy. Yes, it may be an advertisement for some sneaker brand waiting to happen but it is so damned catchy. The operative word hair is catchy, not necessarily “good”. But good/catchy are interchangeable phrases when watching a video and snapping your fingers as she’s saying “see, what we’re gonna do is dance,” blah, blah, yadda, yadda. The point is, this fashion infused, footwear centric song is big for reasons no one here can understand. For now, someone has to stop us from pressing replay on the Youtube button.

Some here at Papierdoll (who will go unnamed) just can’t understand the allure of Tory Burch to the fashion public at large. Not that our understanding as a body is a prerequisite for her success (as illustrated by her recent CFDA win), but it would be nice to understand where EVERYONE else is coming from. Is it the sheer number of accessories that she has in her collection? Is it the art behind the creation? Is it her prolific skill in designing accessories? One of our editors who is happy to remain anonymous for fear of enormous backlash from the Tory army gave 3 photos to illustrate his point (Ethan), and says their is inconsistency. I am in the Tory corner simply because of these sandals:

It’s a fair question to ask out in the open (but don’t let too many hear you). Costa forms a symbiotic relationship with the female form and answers the question, how do I wear this? Instead of over embellishing a piece he stays true to the Calvin Klein mantra of simplicity through beauty with slight touches of sophistication. So the question in this gushing appraisal of CFDA’s womenswear designer of the year award is not why he received it, the question is, why not?

Eric Wilson at the New York Times has found that clothes have actually gone down in price since the highs of the late 90s. He provides several examples to back up his point including at the very top two items of clothing that cost less now than they in 1998. Example 1 is a pair of Levi’s jeans that retail for $46 now when back in 1998 it retailed for $50. Example 2 is a Lacoste polo that retails now for $75 when back in 1998 it retailed for $95. There are other examples as well of the price depreciation. This leads one to believe that the prices are indeed going down and the sky is falling. Not so fast. Wilson looks at the other end of the spectrum. You know, the place where up is down and a scarf can set you back $1,000? That’s right the luxury market. That market doesn’t understand what reduced pricing means, a quick example is $1,900 Lady Dior bag that now retails for 73 percent higher than a previous version. So where do the prices go up and down? According to Wilson, with underwear, denim and other run of the mill clothing that [...]

If you want to understand how much fashion matters look no further than the recent debate behind swimsuits being worn during the Olympics and the effect it has had on the competition. While normal observers (read: everyone) has looked at the cool/sleek space aged suits as if they were something from sci-fi flicks, they actually indeed do something. Some suits create a sort of aerodynamic shape allowing for better mobility, others are created for speed and less resistance and still others are created for both. Which led to this article on the Fashion of Speed on CBS that caught the eye. Some have said that the Speedo suits were unfair and the Tyr suit was at a competitive disadvantage. For those who simply look great wearing a two piece and hardly even step in the olympic pool in the backyard, this mattered to a hill of beans. But what’s intriguing is that the fashion behind the suits are created by not only NASA (as in the case with Speedo), but fashion designers as well. The colors used are not arrived at by accident. There is a method to the sleekness. And while the fight rages on, designers and the companies [...]

Although try as this blog might to put some sort of coorelation to the Paltrow’s 4 minute film for Tod’s and Sarah Jessica Parker’s major release, there really is none. It’s just one big coincidence. The film directed by Dennis Hopper is making it’s debut at Cannes and then going straight to the Tod’s website.
Surely Success Magazine’s list of greatest fashion entrepreneurs is missing a name or two. The three top fashion entrepreneurs according to the magazine include Ralph Lauren (but of course), Levi Strauss (ok two for two), and Phil Knight (hold them there horses). Knight may have created the top athletic brand in Nike, but it was arguably as a result of creative, successful marketing than being so utterly fashionable. For athletic wear that’s fashionable all one has to do is look at Puma. So to really get to the bottom of things, Knight is more at home being the successful marketing entrepreneur/guy than fashion. While Success did not solicit for additions here are a couple of names they may be missing altogether: Coco Chanel (helped build sprawling fashion empire), Louis Vuitton (see Coco Chanel), Rene Lacoste (who bridged the athletic/fashion gap)… the list goes on and there’s sure to be hand wringing over any that was missed here.
No there is no real Sex and the City Watch going on, but there might as well be all things considered. This movie is getting more buzz than The Devil Wears Prada. It’s not hard to see why as every sort of minutiae is being thrown in from what the characters eat, to the actual wedding scenes (that wasn’t a spoiler), to the designers being used. In this vein The LA Times blog looks at Pat Fields magician-like precision when it comes to striking the tone between the Carrie Bradshaw that was and the Carrie Bradshaw that is now. She looks at the character several years later and her fashion tastes have not so much grown as she as evolved”. Fields is quoted as saying, “I saw Carrie a little more sexy, a little more evolved, a little more calm with herself as a woman, she was still going through her eclectic things, and she was gaining in her profession.” The movie comes out at the end of May.
Here’s a random question for you. Since the advent of the fashion photo shoot, designers have been in love with the whole airplane-runway to black car theme. The question is, what message are they trying to convey with the whole going somewhere theme? A recent ad that got this question to come up is Michael Kors’ campaign for his signature perfume line. Again we see a beautiful woman apparently just exiting a plane and going directly to her waiting car. While we can smell the perfume, we just know she’s wearing Michael Kors. How could she not be? She is a trendsetter jumping from one locale to another and if she’s going to wear a perfume that enables her to do this sort of thing, it must be Kors. And while Michael is not the only one who does this sort of jet setting ad it is the most recent example. Granted there’s nothing wrong with it, you just have to wonder the point of it all. Wouldn’t it be much simpler to have a photo of the bottle against a white background? If you like anything Michael Kors, surely you will love his perfume whether on a runway or [...]

If one were to take a trip into Sarah Jessica Parker’s mind and see what she were thinking what would it be like? The question comes up because the news last week was about how she wore a $9 dress on the red carpet at the The Cinema Society’s event. Now normally SJP wears shoes that cost more than some folks’ wardrobe, but this time she went down the shameless self-promotion avenue and wore a dress that costs $8.98. So what was she thinking, what was in her mind? Possibly when she threw it on, there was pain. De constructing the photo one can infer that there’s this tortured smile with a yearning for Chanel, or Narcisso or (insertunaffordabledesignerhere). While the Bitten line she’s selling at Steve and Barry’s has it high points, this beach dress from the Love Boat era is not one of them. And so SJP a bit of advice, if you’re going to create something for the masses to wear (which in and of itself is a noble cause), make it something current that everyone will actually want to wear..
Commenter Joy An left a quick quip on a recent post that maybe women should stop wearing high heels altogether if they can’t manage walking in them, nevermind the pain that comes with walking on a pair of 6 inchers. Gwyneth Paltrow obviously is paying no attention to Joy An as she’s ameliorating the heel pain by going to the doctor and getting holistic treatment for her back. The question is does she have a back ailment from routine aging like some people do, or is it a direct result of wearing ultra-high heels. Most would vote for the latter ahead of the former. It’s hard not to want to wear something super-ultra luxuriously high, especially when it adds inches and creates a gorgeous silhouette, but Joy An, your point it taken. Heels are not for the faint of heart, or feet.

If you were wondering when this eco-aware fashion stuff will end and the industry will get back to the raping and pillaging of earth’s natural resources and animals don’t hold your breath. Everyone is on the environmentally conscious fashion train with little to no end in sight. The New York Times a couple of days ago featured an article on Future Fashion (the initiative spearheaded by EarthPledge and Barneys New York). Julie Gilhart, fashion director at Barneys posits, ” Design and creativity don’t have to be sacrificed to make garments that are less harmful to the earth. In fact, developing something sustainable can be a much more creative process.” Here’s the small counterpoint from your’s truly: the idea behind sustainable fashion is creating environmentally friendly, “green” fashion collections, that is both practical and yes… fashionable. From a purely economical standpoint the masses will never see the benefit’s of the designer’s works and their green raison d’etre when only the elite can purchase their clothing. While there will surely be a market at the lower end of the spectrum for “green” collections. Creating eco-fashion for the few who can afford it mutes the purpose of going in that direction in the [...]

By now the news of 15 year old Miley Cyrus going topless in Vanity Fair has reached a fever pitch. Noticeably silent has been publisher Graydon Carter and Annie Leibovitz. Leibovitz responded yesterday by saying “sheeeeiiiitt… this teen is crazy damn insane and the conservatives in America need to have a warm cup of shut the eff up.” We kid. Leibovitz released a statement saying “I’m sorry that my portrait of Miley has been misinterpreted, Miley and I looked at fashion photographs together and we discussed the picture in that context before we shot it. The photograph is a simple, classic portrait, shot with very little makeup, and I think it is very beautiful” While rationalizing a 15 year old wearing nothing more than a sheet in the Conservative States of America is next to impossible (can’t wait for President McCain to be sworn in), Cyrus and her handlers are not blameless. At a photoshoot the subject is more than aware of the photos being taken, because… they. are. posing. for. photos.
This lip gloss is making it’s way around the office. Korres’ cherry oil lip gloss is this super slick, high shine color product that promises to hydrate lips, while providing protection via vitamins E & C, all this while curing all major diseases and putting an extra Spring in your step. That’s hyperbole on this writer’s part. It won’t cure the world’s ills but it’s definitely receiving high praise here at the ‘doll. They key is that it’s part of that whole eco-aware thing and is completely paraben free, mineral oil free, propylene glycol free and ethanolamine free. To tell you the truth most don’t don’t what the heck those chemicals are (your’s truly included). They sound like things you don’t want on your lips though so we’ll give Korres that. The reason why this lip gloss deserves it’s own blog post, is simply because of the shiny longevity of the whole affair. Put it on in the morning and by 1pm it will most likely still be there. Maybe not as shiny, but still there. One has to wonder if there are no chemicals that may prove to be harmful to lips 50 years from now, how do they [...]

Man, the fashion industry really is in exercising it’s demons mode. From using sweatshops, to being eco-aware, to using anorexic models and now Vogue Italia is set to shine the light on the disgusting process of excluding models of color from being the pages of their publication, by making an almost all black issue this July. It’s no secret that we’ve had our fun lambasting designers and magazines that seem to be color blind. That is, blind to models of color. That is, not even realizing beauty from non-white models exist, and can actually make clothes look… gasp… appealing. This might even lead to an increase in sales. And what are we doing this for if we are not making money…right? Right? So congratulations to Vogue Italia for making this happen. But this shouldn’t be a one-time thing and the fashion industry has a habit of regressing quickly and making things worse. There’s almost an expectation that after this issue, someone might have a black, 14 year old, anorexic model wearing items from a designer who uses endangered species skin as material, all made in a South American sweatshop. Or not.

For those trying to figure out what’s up with the slowly losing counter-culture force that is A Bathing Ape, they just opened up a store in Los Angeles. The question is why is the store so popular with everyone who hates the technical term “trend”? What happens if all of a sudden, the exclusivity of BAPE becomes, not-so-exclusive? Here’s what happens, nothing. It’ll never happen according to a friend who states that BAPE’s appeal is that the masses can never accept it because the masses can’t afford it. There’s a coup. Price something out of the range of common folk and voila, you have a hit. On further inspection, the prices are truly out there all things considered and looking at the range. A good example is this top, it sells for $58. In the world of fashion it may not necessarily be a deal breaker especially where bras may end up in the range of $500 to $1000. The key here is that the bra, does not have the aura of being an Aubade, Agent Provacateur, or (insert expensive designer here). So what’s your BAPE story, why do you shop there?

To be completely fair, Wal-Mart’s first effort at carrying skinny jeans and other items dubbed as “stylish” was a half hearted attempt, a lark if you will. This time they need to wade in the pool more carefully. Even the most discerning fashion lover finds something at Wal-Mart and though they may not fully commit to purchasing anything besides normal sundry, a glance past the clothing rack at something relevant might happen. The key (if anyone is listening), is to not try to be Target. Do your thing, sparingly. The mom jeans are what sells, don’t abandon that for “fashionable” items. Just go slow.
How does one walk on 6 inch heels? Simple. Have a guy hold you up as you’re walking. That was the Gwyneth Paltrow solution as she walked in her 6 inch heels. The New York Daily News has an article on that topic and while they don’t cover any new ground the photo gallery alone of models falling in their heels is worth the price of admission. Have heels gotten out of control? In a word yes. 6 inch heels cause nodules on your feet, ask Posh. The solution according to the article is wearing a mix of flats at times and then wearing heels. Designers are not creating heels for comfort, the very notion is anti-thetical to what heels are all about. Heels are meant to be beautiful, almost artlike (see Louboutin post earlier this week). So to answer the original question: How does one walk on 6 inch heels, practice, practice practice. Speaking of shoes, DSW has finally opened their online store.
