Which is why when you first look at Phillip Lim’s social media cum app intense ad campaign you have to wonder exactly what the influence was fashion or Instagramm? PS: The collection is a must have this season.

But a question begs answering…is the H&M collection new or is it a mish-mash of items from the earlier collections. Again, I’d like to restate that I wouldn’t care either way, but if someone from the Fashion Spot notices you can be reasonably assured that there is some measure of merit to the argument. So what is it Lanvin? Is it new or vintage re-done? P.S. The Lanvin collection for H&M drops November 22.

No matter what you think of the collection after a runway show, look book or press preview, the best ad campaigns show you the fashion in a new and exciting way. They can draw your attention to a brand you normally aren’t remotely interested in or turn you off of one of your favorites. These are some of our favorite ad campaigns for Spring 2010. Above you’ll see Lara Stone – one of my current faves, the more she talks the more I like her – shot by Steven Meisel for Louis Vuitton. I’m sorry, I just think a real model does it better than Madonna. And I like how the brand sort of known for pulled-together chic is used in a really bohemian way here, surely to tie in to their travel heritage. See more campaign images and behind the scenes beauty photos here. Luxury houses are certainly trying to play down the… well, luxury in the current climate, because Hermes is another brand that goes all “oh we’re just about bright colors and braids and a young Karlie Kloss!” in their spring 2010 campaign shot by Paolo Roversi. A little more city chic is Prada’s ad starring Rasa [...]

Creative Director, David Lipman, says quite frankly that Georgia’s parentage is a large part of why she was chosen for the ads. Being that she is half American and half British she literally personifies the image (the union jack is their logo) Hudson Jeans wishes to create. Full lips, sultry eyes, blond hair — American. Questionable teeth — British. I’d say so far she’s doing an excellent job.

Apparently Chanel went for the younger, less pregnant and more French actress. In the wild and wacky world of fashion advertising and branding, it somehow makes sense that Tautou fits the mold of Chanel. She has a sort of retro visage, while resembling Madame Coco, if only slightly. This changing of the Chanel guard happens in 2009 and there’s some excitement in regards to her fronting the campaign specifically because she will be working on a commercial that was also directed by her Amelie director Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

Here’s a random question for you. Since the advent of the fashion photo shoot, designers have been in love with the whole airplane-runway to black car theme. The question is, what message are they trying to convey with the whole going somewhere theme? A recent ad that got this question to come up is Michael Kors’ campaign for his signature perfume line. Again we see a beautiful woman apparently just exiting a plane and going directly to her waiting car. While we can smell the perfume, we just know she’s wearing Michael Kors. How could she not be? She is a trendsetter jumping from one locale to another and if she’s going to wear a perfume that enables her to do this sort of thing, it must be Kors. And while Michael is not the only one who does this sort of jet setting ad it is the most recent example. Granted there’s nothing wrong with it, you just have to wonder the point of it all. Wouldn’t it be much simpler to have a photo of the bottle against a white background? If you like anything Michael Kors, surely you will love his perfume whether on a runway or [...]

Included are shirts designed by soon-to-be, if-not-already icons Philip Lim, threeASFOUR, Michael Bastien, Band of Outsiders and Philip Crangi. While the Old Navy stores are seeing declines in sales for being thought of as way too fashionable, Gap fears that not one bit since they’ve gone in that direction before. Besides, that glaring problem, the collection is definitely a must have as the white shirts all have their own distinct design direction.
There’s a reason why designers, retailers and the like go for celebrities in their advertising. They sell clothing. Moreso than models, (unless the model is a supermodel celebrity), they just have that certain cachet that you can’t get by putting an unknown in your ad campaign. Enter Eva Longoria once again for Bebe’s new ad campaign. The recent Mrs. Parker’s campaign for Bebe debuted recently to eye opening magazine readers everywhere. With less not an ounce of fat per millimeter, Longoria’s swim ad may single handedly be the reason why women will have a whole new set of body issues to deal with come the summer.

I’ve been behind on doing that but was reminded by this ad in Nylon Magazine (there’s also an unrelated Alexander McQueen cheerleading thing that I’ll talk about next week). But I dig the direction of this season’s ads. I think I dig it specifically because the designs have been ratcheted up a notch. What that means is structurally, all of a sudden, the French Connection stuff look like what you would have coming out of the new hip cool designer of the week, except they’ve been around much longer than that guy/gal. And while it is retail and not straight from “designer A”, the Spring line is definitely worth a second or third look.

While many are going to immediately shoot off their mouths and say they are oh so over the party photos / fashion thing, Ben Sherman’s new campaign shows us why it has life left in it. The series of ads shot by photo blogger Merlin Bronques and styled by blogging contributor Josh Madden takes us into the world of Ben Sherman. We didn’t know this world existed until now. Sherman has not been known as the party type in ads, but things change. The obvious question is with so many bloggers (ok, 2) involved with the campaign will the blogosphere be lit up with everything Ben Sherman, knowing that their own contributed to such a cool shoot? Was it Ben Sherman’s insidious master plan to get bloggers behind this season’s collection by putting them in charge of the aforementioned cool shoot? Are we over-thinking things? Probably. One thing is for certain: in our minds, Sherman has just gone up 53.5 cool points on our cool meter. See the rest of the images at Fashionista.

You don’t read Vogue, Elle, Instyle for the wonderfully deep fashion articles. You read them to see the ads. At least that’s what we’re thinking the editors believe. So it comes as no surprise that we would have our favorites. There was no scientific guess work here, we trolled through our stacks of magazines started scanning a handful of pages and finally picked the ones that we really wanted to highlight. One thing to note: all of the ads were from print magazines. Few fashion publications online featured ads that we could literally feature in this blog section and perhaps next year maybe January we’ll delve deeper into the subject on magazine side of things. Special mentions include designer ads on Zoozoom.com, the Uniqlo ads on Hint, and the work done on showstudio.com that eventually went into print. You have to wonder why fashion ads are not as gorgeous online as they are on print. It’s not that the media doesn’t exist and the format can have movement, texture and color you would never get in a print ad. Hopefully that changes within the next year or so. For the time being here are some of our favorite print ads [...]

This season via Showstudio, we’re treated with the YSL ads shot by Inez Van Lambsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Chances are your ad won’t go wrong with Gisele Bundchen fronting the campaign. It’s about the collection as well and we’ll knock through our favorites one by one. The classic blocked heel pumps with rounded tip is top on the list. The nylon Shiny Duvet trench coat another wishlist favorite at Papierdoll. Another item that consistently runs through our minds while ogling Gisele is the handbag seen below.
