I’m becoming a fan of the Mademoiselle Fall 2013 collection for a handful of reasons. After taking a look at the most recent lookbook (which we’ll be publishing in foto form soon) I thought what appealed to me was the fact that the collection went in a couple of different directions. There’s the vampy leather clad angle skirt that replaces the slit with stretch chiffon which is matched with a silk modal jersey and a leather sleeve. It’s something you can easily see a Hollywood socialite wearing it but at the same time you have this bridal lace dress that is definitely mod inspired as it’s nearly a mile over the knee. It’s as if two different designers put together the collection. That’s a great thing. Keeps the masses guessing.

Last month in the magazine, we featured Cydelic a handbag collection by designer Choryin Choi. He created an unconventional look with punk-like accents, beads and chain straps. It was a different strong look that most are not used to seeing. I wanted to highlight it in blog format, because this designer I feel is one to watch. His unconventional approach and his ability to mix a myriad of styles together into something cohesive and beautiful, gives hope that fashion can be daring via a new infusion of talent. Head over to see his full profile and all the photos here.

We’re featuring Duro Olowu later on this week on the magazine side of Papierdoll, but I received this e-mail today and read it in it’s entirety about twice. The first thing I thought to myself was, self, someone at JC Penney sold their sold to the devil to get Olowu. Anne-Marie our lead photog in London, will attest that this is a coup as his footprint overseas is much larger than his presence here. But that in itself might be the answer, expose Duro’s collection to an American audience via JC Penney, a trojan horse diffusion line of sorts. Here’s an excerpt from the release: The exclusive collection, Duro Olowu for jcp, features apparel and accessories for women, as well as home goods, including dinnerware, stationery and décor items. Ranging in price from $10 to $100, Duro Olowu for jcp will be available this spring from March through May 2013 at most jcpenney stores and jcp.com. “I am proud to partner with jcpenney to create and launch this new seasonal collection,” said designer Duro Olowu. “Working with jcpenney has allowed me to merge my vision of style and quality with their affordability, resulting in a line that is stylish, beautifully [...]

The anonymous designers at MaxMara can toil in obscurity all they want (or rather all the Maramotti family wants), but there’s no mistaking the overall angle. Creating instantly wearable collections that can go from season to season without skipping a beat seems to be the ethos behind this collection. The 2013 season is no different. During the presentation for the Spring 2013 season, the MaxMara collection contained a distinctly safari like bent, not quite African, not quite Indian, just a melange of striped colors, camouflage and prints that range in the realm of animal to floral. The blouses had lightweight hoods and were the length of t-shirts in some instances. The collection was styled with oversized chunky bags and equally open toe chunky clogs with a strapped around the heel. An elegant but by-the-numbers collection from a designer that has hundreds (if not thousands) of stores worldwide.

When Milan fashion week opened last Thursday many in the media did not know what to expect. It’s not that the Italian designers like to throw everyone for a loop just for fun. It’s just that by and large, the designers are fickle and can be influenced by nearly anything. So when Frida Giannini debuted Gucci’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection she apparently knew (and this is just supposition) that overtly sexy dress was out and a more subtle titillation was due this season. By displaying prints that had a myriad of swirls, turns and curls, belted tunics that were not quite shirt but also couldn’t fall into your garden variety tops. Then there were silk organza dresses long in form that belied what would normally be taken as a stodgy dress, far from, it was sexy because the movement of the fabric mirrored the form underneath. This was no ordinary Gucci show. This was Giannini showing us that she knew something that we didn’t: for this collection at least, sexy wasn’t a decade, wasn’t a concept, wasn’t even overt. It was and is an overall aesthetic.

If you were wondering where Alberta Feretti would go for her Spring Summer 2013 collection, wonder no more. Ferretti went uber feminine conjuring up lace, frills, in multiple hues. Nearly all of the pieces shown were not typical everyday items. Ferretti stressed gowns in rich shimmery black as well as nude, but saved the lace and delicate materials for an array of greens and blues. Lace was a recurring theme throughout the show and the designer did it to extended elaborate effect (think Cate Blanchett, Lord of the Rings epic). There was also a sensual feel to the show that highlighted Ferretti’s homage to the feminine form. First thing that comes to mind is a sheer lace set in violet with matching undergarments. This collection was neither out of character for Ferretti or bold enough to change the overall story of Ferretti’s imprimatur.

After looking at the few pics from the collection, the first thought that came into my head was, someone at Gap and Banana Republic should be taking notes. While never known for high-end fashion, the designers there always created more than serviceable looks.
It’s very hard selecting the top designers in fashion. This is especially the case when they are all creating at a high level; but each year the British Fashion Awards does just that. What’s really eye opening is the list of designers named for best designer for 2012. The nominees are: Christopher Kane, Mary Katrantzou, Stella McCartney. Yeah, it’s that hard. Mary Katrantzou had an incredible year being featured no less than 10 times in major fashion publications. A lot of editor here at PD call Katrantzou the queen of prints. She’s nearly without a peer in creating prints. Her collection ranges from bold to daring and everything in between those two. Stella McCartney has also had a standout year taking a classic polished decidedly English aesthetic to her most recent collections. PD highlighted her resort 2013 collection that debuted in New York. Christopher Kane’s resort 2013 collection was split between an experiment in beauty and some sort of adherence to art. What did this get him? He received accolades across the board both from buyers and the fashion intelligentsia. Picking the best designer of the year? Yeah, this is going to be hard.

A closet without at least one Jenny Packham dress is pretty much one without a soul. Jenny Packham is one of the rare designers you can call a dressmaker. That title is rarely used and hearkens back to a day when the person creating the dress focused on several different functions and points on the form of a dress. A dressmaker would look at the female form, understood the style and culture of an era and would express his/her imagination in fabric and cut. Jenny Packham has done this for several seasons. The Fall 2012 collection had very little flash. It was more substantive and unmistakable Packham. She made no apologies for her liberal use of sequins, crystals and other adornments on the dresses, nor should she. There was rhyme and reason behind this dressmaker slash designer’s collection. With that said, we can only look forward with a rushed excitement for what Packham has up her sleeve for the Spring 2013 collections. She debuts it this September during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York.

Filled with strong forceful prints, even more rigid lines, a mastery of color selection and an attention to detail nearly unparalleled in fashion. An evolution of sorts, Michael Angel went from sirens-loud in Spring, to muted attention-getting in the Fall. Every color, every detail is intelligently placed with rhyme and reason outlined but not overstated. You know why the jacket below is cut just above the waist, it works well and is effortless on the female form. It’s exacting to the millimeter. The trousers provide just enough room to be loose in the right place (just above the knee and straight through the calf) without being outlandishly big. The shoulder-less dress is sexy just enough, but also serious. It’s adult without being boring. There’s anticipation for a Spring 2013 collection and the hope is it continues this designer’s evolution. What’s next is unpredictable, but more than welcome.

images from Roland Santana Autumn/Winter 2012 collection Designers nowadays need every help they can get to break through the din of noise that is the crowded season of collection debuts, economic downturns and celebrity wear. It’s not for the faint of heart. Rolando Santana has piggybacked the debut of two new shoes from Manolo Blahnik and transformed it into one of the reasons you should see his collection. Truth be told, seeing anything new from Manolo is an excellent reason to view the show. But I would contend that Santana’s past collections bode well for his next showing to stand well on its own. Take for example his Autum/Winter 2012 collection. It’s filled with creative use of furs, skirts, metallic dresses and shear fabrics that get attention without being gimmicky. I’ve had the kool-aid and I’m a believer that Santana’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection is going to be well worth the viewing. He debuts the collection Monday, September 10th at an invite only show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York.

If there’s one thing you get after seeing Heidi Merrick’s collection for Fall 2012 there’s at least one item that you’ll wear. There may be more, but it won’t take a whole lot of convincing. Just a quick glance at the recent images I viewed, I automatically gravitated toward look 4 and 5 in the first row, look 1, 6 and 9 in the second row and look 3 in the in third row. The prints take the collection in a different direction. Individually it’s tough to make an honest assessment without throwing in personal preference against because they’re just left of contemporary but not edgy enough to be some newfangled avant guarde styling. So basically that means, her Fall collection is strong with a personal caveat that stands against the prints. Still, it’s hard to go negative on a designer with excellent energy (as demonstrated in video below) and a great eye for the female form.

My-wardrobe, the e-tailer for those in the know has re launched with a new look and more directed vision. The new look was unveiled at a party hosted at Sketch in London’s Mayfair to a crammed room of the fashion pack. Being London Fashion Week, it was prime time for gathering the crucial eyes of the editors from the UK and those travelling in the fashion month. Giant projections around the room showed the various shoots, shot in beautiful locations, new layouts and a feel that definitely had those around to wanting to shop. After the greetings, speeches and thanks to the crowd I managed to talk CEO and Founder Sarah Curran, who explained the thinking behind the look and a few other changes. Sarah introducing the new look site. Emily: The relaunch for My-wardrobe showing a fresh new look, what were influencing factors to make the changes? Sarah: Customer insight research showed us that our customer was slightly older than first thought and had a high expectation of what they wanted to see on site in terms of both designer and editorial content. It also confirmed that there is a huge demand for ‘everyday luxury’ designer clothing – those fabulous [...]

I am going to squeeze this Pre Fall post in just before the Fashion month kicks off in NY for AW11. I know other fashion weeks are happening, and I am not discounting them but me being a tad traditional, and plus I don’t think I can keep up with them all as I have a team of, well, 1, I stick to the fab four. I visited the Louis Vuitton press office in London yesterday to have a peek at the Pre Fall 11, and was not disappointed. The fabulous 20′s of PG Woodhouse and Jeeves and Wooster sprang to mind as I saw the beautifully constructed luggage, elegant cashmere separates, wide legged trousers and suiting. Nothing dull here, but a refined quality, which you know you will always have at LV. The evening looks leapt into the fun of the time with sequins, feathers and furs adorning the flapper inspired dresses. As I have mentioned before, presentation is a big thing to me especially on the press day trail, it’s the little touches that can make a collection stick in the mind. Here the showroom was set up as a film set and the look book presented as [...]

I have seen a new label, which has caught my eye and I love their collection. I want to share with you, so you too can track its inevitable rise to the top. The clothes are fresh, simple and they feel just as if you should own them all because you could wear every piece, all the time, although that could prove highly dangerous for amicable relations with my bank manager. The designer, Christine Elise Kolnberger-Aziz, grew up watching her Grandfather at work as a menswear tailor in Germany. It was here her love of design was born (cough, excuse the pun). Seres is in fact Spanish for “beings” and the collection is called ‘Little Seres’ showing just how personally Christine want to make the Borne collection – every piece has its own personality. My top 5 from the collection, I struggled with this as you can see: 1. Ritcher / Wagner Trousers 2. Hurzog t shirt 3. Ritcher Shorts 4. Cami Baron Dress 5. Kaiser Cami/Furst top I am not the only one who thinks so, the Editors on the big glossies, including British Vogue, are shooting piece after piece from this German bred, Spanish made brand.
In the basement of Harrods a new space has opened for the men. With a different concept to the rest of the Harrods department store, the feel of the space is far more contemporary in its looks and feels very masculine with the steel, concrete and mirror surroundings. It houses exclusive ranges from Topman, Raf by Raf Simons, Diesel and G Star and also a great selection of denim including 7 for All Mankind and Natural Selection (a personal favourite). A lovely boy from the TopMan Ad Campaign. Whilst browsing the rails, we were served delicious cocktails from the barman at 69 Colebrooke Row (the bar with no name). The main ingredient was a vodka like spirit which is pretty potent so beware… 69 Colebrooke Row Bar staff knocking up a cocktail ….
The orange and brown flag was blustering about outside, proudly signaling the opening of the store below. It is the new kid on the block; only she is not that new, just a very well kept secret – until now. Tory Burch has finally launched in the UK, helping the expats of the US in London, specifically New Yorkers, feed their Burch habit. For a while now the gold emblem has been sneaking around on the toes of those that know, winking in the sun (when there is any) and causing a niggling feeling that you know the sign but you just cannot place it. The store on New Bond Street is a sleek boutique, which stands in the shell of a townhouse, and so the layout lends itself to the residential feel the store gives. Tory herself has designed each store with a home in mind, and the Bond Street store gives a superb impersonation of New York apartment. Last week it was crammed full – literally – with clients, celebrities and press to celebrate its opening.
It never usually rains it pours in England, but then on the day of the Mackintosh store launch, where was the downpour? No where to be seen. Typical. The store is on the exclusive Mount Street in Mayfair, and sits neatly along side the labels of Christian Louboutin, Lanvin and Balenciaga, to name but a few. To compliment the space in design, Wonderwall Architects have created a light and modern look, but does not detract from the traditional heritage brand. Founder Masamichi Katayama says of the project “my goal was to create restrained beauty, as it was important for Mackintosh to show that even their new collections are derived from history and archives”. Center stage on the lower floor ladies room there is a glass cylinder in which a piece from the heritage range is hung. Tonight it was a vibrant red traditional mackintosh. It was surrounded by many collaborations, resulting in a rainbow of colour and print. The Red mac with glass droplets of rain in the cylinder. Rainbows and lace Stripes Spots As I passed by the gallery of hanging coats, they caught my eye. The stitching and attention to detail is quite astounding. Each Mac is hand [...]

7 For All Mankind have reached a big birthday. 10 years on and still growing incredibly quickly covering most major cities in Europe, not to mention its native US. To celebrate the launch of two new London stores, they threw a fabulous party in the eastend. The cocktails were all named after the styles of jeans and the nibbles had an all American theme. Mini beef burgers and chips washed down with a Bootcut (or 3) were our favourites. photographer: Dave Benett Suspended in a line were giant perspex frames holding the 10th anniversary collection. Each of the 10 designs are a new reworked version of the original archive style. I loved the way they were displayed (actually I wanted to have one in my house, but soon realised that I need to have space to hang it. Plan foiled) After inspecting the displays and making a mental note of which I wanted on my Christmas list, we moved downstairs. After the DJ’s we watched a set from MNDR. Having literally only just gone live it also coincided with the screenings the new 4d videos. The video represented 10 years of digital growth, showing many different parts of the well known brand, from the bags, leathers, runway to the sports and fragrance. All of which are now available from the UK site, whether on your computer or your Iphone you can now shop the American lifestyle, and if you choose, make it your own by customising certain pieces. Ralph Lauren Store, London These presentations were beamed across the fronts of the flag ships stores here in London, on Bond Street, and in NYC at Madison Avenue. Over here there were thick crowds, fighting the bitter chill to watch the much hyped spectacle. As we filed out of the store having been treated to champagne, nibbles and a rest bite from the cold, the music began, cheers started and then a hush as the picture story unfolded.
One of the most highly anticipated collaborative collections has been revealed – to the press at least. With it there is a short film, which you can watch here, showing the collection growing in stages. A clever story of love, sex appeal, and inspiration. I have watched over and over, its hypnotic. A blend of the iconic Lanvin design, material and touch of Alber has been brought to the masses. These are the millions that look up to him so much twice a year when he shows on the runway, and then silently sigh, or in my case weep, because it will always be a dream, not a reality that a piece of Lanvin will grace my wardrobe. The menswear is just as exciting as the women’s range, and it fits well. A cheeky try on from a male journalist proved that the cut was quality. Over sized bow ties and metallic shoes embraced the quirkiness for the men, and they matched well with the classic of the trench and thin knit cardigans. For the ladies its all out glamour, even the t-shirts illustrated by Alber’s designs are jewel encrusted and sequined. illustration: alber elbaz The extravagance of Lanvin is [...]

Hintmag.com recently interviewed Chanel’s Jacques Polge. For those of you living under a rock or other type of crevice, Polge is Chanel’s perfumer. If you’re wearing some type of Chanel perfume right now, chances are Polge came up with it via Alchemy and quite a bit of perfume sorcerers magic. In the interview he explains to Stéphane Gaboué of Hint how he came up with Egoïste via Ernest Beaux’s (creator of No. 5) early creation Bois des Iles. He tells how Americans sanitized the perfume industry:“You know, I started my career in the United States. Perfumes were then made of both good-smelling and bad-smelling ingredients. But the bad-smelling ingredients, when used in a certain way, brought something sensual and interesting to the final scent. The first time I arrived at work, they told me, “You want to work here? Then smell this.” They made me smell chives. With American puritanism, all these kinds of fragrances disappeared.” He also discusses the now infamous Egoiste commercial (be careful if you watch it you’ll play it over and over again). Read the entire interview here.

Almost every designer fresh out the gates finds someone drawing parallels to Marc Jacobs or some other major established fashion scion. The comparisons end up being too lofty and eventually unattainable as the designer tends to peter out or simply does not have the chops to be mentioned in the same breath. So this profile won’t do that, but by the very mention of Marc Jacobs, that would seem to be the intention. It is clearly not, but what it is, is an attempt to show the potential of design duo of Javier Garcia and Vaughan Alexander. The Verlaine Fall collection is like a hit parade of challenging themes. Entirely wearable, this trend-busting line says it all. It says outerwear need not have symmetrical lines for the season (see the Wool Felt Triangle coat) below: It says you can make a floor length dress entirely out of Jersey and add spiral columns (see the Jersey Dress below) It says you can look a season ahead in a cocoon coat (we’ve seen them before but never done so well in boiled wool): The Verlaine Spring collection is also looking very progressive this season as well. We have some photos in-house but [...]

Ask about Manuel De La Cruz the fashion designer and you may get a puzzled look from many. Show the works of Manuel De La Cruz and the looks may turn from puzzlement to an ooh or an ahh. Manuel De La Cruz is a designer who comes from humble beginnings but is carving a path out in an industry that has a short memory on those who never quite got “there”. “There” of course being a place between fame and notoriety. Being just shy of “there” may be just fine for De La Cruz whose Spanish-inspired ruffled shirts and satin matador pants are reminiscent of a latin generation gone by. Manuel De La Cruz fuses modern trimmings with classical fit and finish for a fall collection that is not too jarring and not entirely functional. This seems to be done on purpose as every piece has some sort of nuance that stops it from being an everyday dress. His plunging v-neckline black dress is accessorized with a black laced up arm band that turns it from sexy into dangerous. He fights convention with a quasi colorblocked dress, also accentuated with a strong plunging v-neckline. The bio on his site [...]

I first interviewed Lindsay Jones during New York Fashion Week this past February in a cold garment store that doubled as the place where she hosted her presentation. I wrote in my notes that she was onto something with her shawls and pashminas but I may not have gotten “it” until I saw the long black shoulder strap dress from the season’s collection. It was beautiful, daring and intricately constructed. At the time, I talked to her about the direction of the collection and why the departure from what she did for the summer. Her response was simply “I felt like doing more and I found out more about myself while doing this collection.” I jotted down the notes furiously while attempting to hold the heavily alcoholic drinks her staff gave us while waiting downstairs to see the collection. It was absolutely freezing at the upper level of the garment store and some were worried that the building might not be in the best shape. One person mused that we might topple over before we saw the collection, but again, for what was shown, the setting and scenery made complete sense. The Outlaws of the Border collection for Fall 2010 [...]

Diego Binetti is a workman’s designer. While celebrities get a pass for their star status and some stumble into design, Binetti’s resume reads as if he’s wanted to do this for a long time. This drive shows as Binetti has evolved into a designer whose collection is meticulous and intricate. The attention to detail in patterns being used on his dresses for the fall collection and the slight touches and accents demonstrate that his time in Milan was well spent. For the Fall season Diego Binetti uses the elaborate pattern work that we’ve seen before but he also ventures into new territory with a long floor length floral dress, an anime like-print dress with exposed arms tied just right above the elbow (see photo) and a wonderful high waisted pant that shows off any pair of boot (not ankle) that a discerning fashion lover would want to wear. The Diego Binetti collection is one you want to wear, if you can get your hands on it. View the entire collection at I love Binetti website.

The coolest thing next to attending the CFDA awards? Checking out the designer portraits from the program. Here’s a sneak peak of a few nominee’s photos. Always a little bit different, Marc Jacobs couldn’t actually make his shoot so had models pose with masks of his face instead. MJ is nominated for Womenswear Designer of the Year. I don’t know who I love more, Jason Wu (even though he blew me off backstage at his show) or Karlie Kloss, so this is my favorite photo of the bunch. Really love the dress, too. Will it win Wu the Swarovski Award for Womenswear? Womenswear Designer of the Year nominee Alexander Wang posed with some of his friends from high school – super cute idea. What a gorgeous portrait of Donna Karan who is nominated for Womenswear Designer of the Year. Possibly the sexiest of the bunch (tied with Prabal Gurung, next) is Womenswear Designer of the Year nominee Joseph Altuzarra posing with Vanessa Traina. Swarovski Award for Womenswear nominee Prabal Gurung heats up his photo shoot with Heidi Mount. [Source]

The color palette is very gray-day with some blues and whites thrown in. Silhouettes are slim and layery, and you can easily see this collection fitting into a modern city girl’s wardrobe. And just when you think some of the looks might need a little something extra or the collection might need some punch, you get to the scarves. Very beautiful, I think these print creations really help set the brand apart.

Elisa Palomino may be launching her first ready-to-wear collection for Fall/Winter 2010, but she’s certainly no young upstart expecting to make it big in the industry with no experience. Her resume is chock full of impressive recommendations: a master’s in fashion design from St. Martin’s College of Art and design experience for Moschino Cheap and Chic, John Galliano, Dior, Cavalli and Diane von Furstenberg. Whew! If that doesn’t give you the experience to launch your own line, I don’t know what will. The debut collection is promising if a bit uneven. I can’t quite tell if there’s some seasonal confusion going on – such bare dresses and minis paired with fur muffs – or if this is a statement of seasonless dressing. One way in which this ambiguity works well is with color – I love seeing pinks and oranges for fall. Palomino’s haute couture experience shows in her eveningwear, probably her strongest area. Her combination of textures is quite brilliant, even when you’re just looking at a photograph. And evening is when you really want your style to translate in pictures! We look forward to seeing more of Palomino as she gains her footing as an independent designer.

Lauren Merkin handbags recently caught my eye on twitter recently (you’re following Papierdoll and me, too, right?) so I thought I’d pick out a few of my favorites for spring! First up, the Paige, a really classic handbag that comes in lots of colors (as most of Merkin’s bags do) but I thought the orange croco, $525, was just perfect for spring and summer. Even if the rest of your outfit is blah, this bag will really pop! For something that’s a little more “go with everything” I love the Taupe Buff Leather Cecilia, $575. Nudes are a huge trend this spring, and are really a closet staple year-round. Finally, for something a little more girlie and evening, I can think of a million ways to wear the Allie clutch, $250. The pink stingray with rainbow zip trim may be a little too too, but who doesn’t want to go a little overboard for evening? Love.

Received an e-mail today about a new online store that gives me hope that the guesswork behind finding good indie designers (and not indie, indie designers) may be ending or at least reaching a point where it’s not so difficult to anymore. The new store that does exactly has an interesting name, Buy Definition. Which by definition means that I am going to use the whole by definition phrase over and over again. Buy definition melds a cool shopping interface with fashions from designers I know in passing (only because of the hole in the wall shows during fashion week). There’s something gratifying about seeing a Samantha Pleet piece at the Buy Definition online store, knowing that 6 months ago I was at one of her early fashion shows. What really gets the juices flowing is finding out about designers that are a complete mystery to me. While these names may seem familiar to some, to me, they are happy little surprises that I am content to swoon over. Here are some examples I’ve found: Devotte, Fallon, Kensie, Sally Tseng, the aforementioned Samantha Pleet and a favorite from Singapore fashion week (kudos Ali) Khoon Hooi.
