mmmmm MCM…I am showing my age with this one, but I read today that they are looking to make a comeback. The signature bags and accessories maker will be coming back from their 80s grave and I can’t wait.

Not too crazy about this new line from Beyonce Knowles. Though I may be passing judgement before the whole thing is unveiled. Yes it will probably make a boatload of money, yes it will probably be the next big thing, but I just don’t get it.

I knew taking Russian would come in handy one day

When I started high school my mother convinced me to take Russian as my required foreign language -the following year the “Soviet Union” became- “The Former Soviet Union”. So here I was poor Masha (my name in Russian), stuck with taking a somewhat useless language for three more years - and yes, I failed every year, because my Russian Teacher Mr. Tomlinson hated me.

Still I always found the culture (as I do many cultures) extremely fascinating- and can still read it perfectly- I just don’t understand what I am reading. (He really drilled the alphabet into our heads).

All this to say that we missed out on maybe one of the most creatively charged fashion weeks this season: Russian Fashion Week Oct 19-27. The designs were whimsical and embodied a lot of serious attitude. There were a few US and European designers featured, but not enough to really count. One collection, B-Rude, is designed by 80’s pop queen Boy George.

I must say that there was a lot of talent to be found in the collections featured at the shows; raw, classic, and modern…. Check out the RFW site and take a look:

In the what-will-they-think-of-next department… a brand of soap on the market made with all natural ingredients is said to cleanse, refresh and provide a wake-up jolt to your day via your favorite legal drug and mine, caffeine. The soap is a vegetable based gylcerin product and has no animal fat (tallow) for you PETA folks. It lacks harsh ingredients that may contain impurities, or that could be potentially harmful to the skin; it’s hypoallergenic as well.

Whether the caffeine actually has the same effect as drinking a cup of joe is in the air. The price of $6.99 a bar is also a little high, but less than other designer, fragrant bars. Target has the three pack for $14.99

Papierdoll July 2008 Interview

Interview: Thomas Voorn
Sonia Pereira Murphy

Considering the now ubiquitous trend of disposable fashion where all that seems to matter is a cute factor, Thomas Voorn's intellectual take on clothing is not only refreshing, but enlightening. Voorn's fascination with clothing calls to mind an anthropologist intrigued with skeletal remains, a sociologist... [Go]
