You can truly say you’ve seen it all once you’re at the MET and the fashion exhibit is about superheroes or rather what one can become wearing fashions that inspire. That is the gist of the Superheroes exhibit curated by Andrew Bolton. The Costume Institute Gala (you know, the party that you’re not invited to, and every a-lister attends while looking incredibly fabulous) was last night and helped kick off the exhibit.
For the comic nerds out there the exhibit is an orgasmic orgy of superhero costumes mixed in with fashion designer’s leaps of fancy. When you give someone like Gareth Pugh the ability to take dramatic license you know you’re going to get something special. Superhero costumes featured include Ironman’s iron suit, Christian Bale’s suit from The Dark Knight and a host of other pieces. You have to really, thoroughly enjoy stuff like this. Curator Andrew Bolton summed up the exhibition like this:
“At the heart of the superhero are issues about the body, identity and transformation, which are, of course, critical to fashion. Fashion is transcendent and transforming - you can become anybody or anything through fashion.”

Lela Rose Does Jenna’s Dress

Ok so this is old news, but it’s interesting nonetheless and the guess is that you may not have heard this already but Lela Rose is doing Jenna Bush’s wedding dress. Why is this big news? It’s not, unless your Lela Rose, but the thinking is that once the dress is done, almost everyone will want a Lela Rose dress for their wedding. If it’s good enough for Jenna, it’s good enough for me. Of particular note is that Rose’s dress selection for both the bridesmaids and the bride has not one strapless design. While we’re familiar with the White House’s conservative stance on fashion, this is a bit of a new one. What’s wrong with going strapless? Not a thing from this viewpoint.
Looking at the designs our pick at here has got to be the forth one from the right or any of the 4 dresses from the left not counting the first one.

Where are They Going?

Here’s a random question for you. Since the advent of the fashion photo shoot, designers have been in love with the whole airplane-runway to black car theme. The question is, what message are they trying to convey with the whole going somewhere theme? A recent ad that got this question to come up is Michael Kors’ campaign for his signature perfume line. Again we see a beautiful woman apparently just exiting a plane and going directly to her waiting car. While we can smell the perfume, we just know she’s wearing Michael Kors. How could she not be? She is a trendsetter jumping from one locale to another and if she’s going to wear a perfume that enables her to do this sort of thing, it must be Kors.
And while Michael is not the only one who does this sort of jet setting ad it is the most recent example. Granted there’s nothing wrong with it, you just have to wonder the point of it all. Wouldn’t it be much simpler to have a photo of the bottle against a white background? If you like anything Michael Kors, surely you will love his perfume whether on a runway or a white background? Right?

The $9 Dress Heard Round the World
If one were to take a trip into Sarah Jessica Parker’s mind and see what she were thinking what would it be like? The question comes up because the news last week was about how she wore a $9 dress on the red carpet at the The Cinema Society’s event. Now normally SJP wears shoes that cost more than some folks’ wardrobe, but this time she went down the shameless self-promotion avenue and wore a dress that costs $8.98. So what was she thinking, what was in her mind? Possibly when she threw it on, there was pain. De constructing the photo one can infer that there’s this tortured smile with a yearning for Chanel, or Narcisso or (insertunaffordabledesignerhere).
While the Bitten line she’s selling at Steve and Barry’s has it high points, this beach dress from the Love Boat era is not one of them. And so SJP a bit of advice, if you’re going to create something for the masses to wear (which in and of itself is a noble cause), make it something current that everyone will actually want to wear.. Please
