We’re featuring Duro Olowu later on this week on the magazine side of Papierdoll, but I received this e-mail today and read it in it’s entirety about twice. The first thing I thought to myself was, self, someone at JC Penney sold their sold to the devil to get Olowu. Anne-Marie our lead photog in London, will attest that this is a coup as his footprint overseas is much larger than his presence here. But that in itself might be the answer, expose Duro’s collection to an American audience via JC Penney, a trojan horse diffusion line of sorts. Here’s an excerpt from the release: The exclusive collection, Duro Olowu for jcp, features apparel and accessories for women, as well as home goods, including dinnerware, stationery and décor items. Ranging in price from $10 to $100, Duro Olowu for jcp will be available this spring from March through May 2013 at most jcpenney stores and jcp.com. “I am proud to partner with jcpenney to create and launch this new seasonal collection,” said designer Duro Olowu. “Working with jcpenney has allowed me to merge my vision of style and quality with their affordability, resulting in a line that is stylish, beautifully [...]

It’s almost asking too much, but it seems as if from the appearance of recent fashion editorials one of two things has happened: 1. Either someone has directed all fashion mags to go light on the photoshopping or 2. There’s a directive that says curves (even if ever so slight in nature) are a-ok. That definitely was not the case in runway collections this year. But it’s looking like that in fashion magazines. Case-in-point is this feature of Kate Upton in this month’s Vogue. They could have gone heavier on the photoshop (as they’ve done in the past), but that didn’t happen. I’d highlight where the curves are, but you can tell just by viewing.

Faconnable, a french retailer known historically for its menswear collection, recently put out photos for its Autumn/Winter 2012 womenswear items. After looking at the few pics from the collection, the first thought that came into my head was, someone at Gap and Banana Republic should be taking notes. While never known for high-end fashion, the designers there always created more than serviceable looks. I’m sure Faconnable, is aiming at higher price-points, but for what it is and who they are targeting (modern/contemporary), this is spot-on. See photos:

I have seen a new label, which has caught my eye and I love their collection. I want to share with you, so you too can track its inevitable rise to the top. The clothes are fresh, simple and they feel just as if you should own them all because you could wear every piece, all the time, although that could prove highly dangerous for amicable relations with my bank manager. The designer, Christine Elise Kolnberger-Aziz, grew up watching her Grandfather at work as a menswear tailor in Germany. It was here her love of design was born (cough, excuse the pun). Seres is in fact Spanish for “beings” and the collection is called ‘Little Seres’ showing just how personally Christine want to make the Borne collection – every piece has its own personality. My top 5 from the collection, I struggled with this as you can see: 1. Ritcher / Wagner Trousers 2. Hurzog t shirt 3. Ritcher Shorts 4. Cami Baron Dress 5. Kaiser Cami/Furst top I am not the only one who thinks so, the Editors on the big glossies, including British Vogue, are shooting piece after piece from this German bred, Spanish made brand.
Underwear is fast becoming a more than just a necessity. I mean it has taken pride of place in many wardrobes but not everyone takes the care to match everything at all times. Remember the words of your Mother or Grandmother about being hit by buses? well the launch of the new collections from Mimi Holiday and Damaris will perhaps make you want to be hit by the fictitious bus just so you can shed your outer layers to reveal what you have underneath and show off. The fine lace and interesting shapes make for a beautiful collection in pretty pastels and a few more vibrant colours. As well as the usual polka dots from Mimi and the tied knickers from Damaris there are fresh new prints and types of bows to choose between. If you think that underwear should stay covered, perhaps some extravagant hosiery could tempt you? Autumn/Winter has already seen the rise of the pattern, from suspenders at Henry Holland to bondage tights at Wolford. These are having a re-birth having been worn by Cheryl Cole and it is reported that the bondage style sold out the day after she wore them on X-Factor. New for Spring/Summer [...]

Our publisher noted that we’d have a giveaway with them this month, but I was completely oblivious to the designer/brand until I checked out the collection. Normally you find designs with impossibly high price-points but somehow Rem D. Koolhaas and Galahad Clark the architects behind the brand have found a way to get sweetspot pricepoints for architecturally beautiful shoes. Reminiscent of geodesic domes and all things geometrically shaped (with a heaping spoonful of stunning style), these guys have come up with a collection of shoes rivaled by not many. So in a Tuesday homage to fashion, United Nude I salute you. Enter the United Nude Giveaway here Visit the United Nude website here

Remember how last week I posted a diatribe on why celebritywear is dead and I went through the motions trying to illustrate the hows and whys using Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag as examples? Well I may have to make a general correction and re-state for the record. So here goes. For the record celebritywear is truly dead WITH THE EXCEPTION of: L.A.M.B., Edun and Whatever Diddy is doing with Sean John (apparently he just purchased Enyce from Liz Claiborne; Sean John is thriving and owns Zac Posen) But the for the purposes of this post here’s why Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. is the shit. Normally something is just not right with a celebrity’s collection. Either they take something pre-existin in their closet and just add an accent and call it a part of their “new” collection. Conversely, they may create something completely new, but it just looks bad. Stefani and/or the designers behind L.A.M.B. have created accessories (namely the shoes you see above) that are need to haves. The ornately designed strappy is particularly beautiful to look at, not to mention wear. So Ms. Stefani, I am happy not only to mention your collection, but I am emptying my wallet [...]

The talk of the New York mediascape is Madonna’s Glock 9mm heels (or was that a Desert Eagle?), it could be a .22. Whatever the gun model is, Madonna’s Chanel pistol heels were what the fashion slobs and mouth breathers call super chic and that’s fine for them, for myself I’d venture to say that the heels were magically delicious. I’m no better. They’re from Chanel’s cruise collection hitting stores right. about. now. The pop star wore the gun slinging heels for the premiere of her directing debut “Filth and Wisdom”. Now if you’ve seen a Madonna film (one where she’s the lead actress) you know that she’s a multiple grammy award winning music artist and not an Oscar winner for a reason. The buzz behind “Filth” though is lukewarm to not so bad. Which is good by any measure for a Madonna flick. The heels were designed by Laurence Decade for Chanel and will be out later this year. If you’re interested in things like the price…it’s $2200. Who says there’s a worldwide recession?

I won’t say a thing about Patricia Field’s new collection. Ok I’ll say a couple of words only because as a blogger I am afforded the luxury of speaking my mind when it is ok to do so (meaning all the time). I watch HSN from time to time and it’s a grab bag of cash for the designers. It really is. Here’s what happens. You go on HSN, you sell your stuff to middle America, make tons of case, then rinse, lather, repeat. So Patricia Fields has been on a tear recently, selling anything to HSN that’s not bolted down. The initial question was, is this in fact the same collection as what she’s selling in her store? It looks to be the case. While the HSN collection does seem a bit toned down (there’s only so much innovation Kansas can deal with), this other collection is just out there in a Patricia Fields type of way. I’m talking heavy on the use of polka dots, lots of bright colors and asymmetrical everything. It’s almost doesn’t make sense, but this is fashion, so sense sometimes takes a back seat to creativity. more so than that, it’s Patricia Fields and [...]

This thing is so mysterious and tightly wrapped that when asked direct questions, the PR people say “all will be revealed at the event tonight”. I haven’t been this stoked since the return of Heroes, did they save the cheerleader, what happened to Sylar? The show might have jumped the shark for me with evil Claire, but I digress. The event pic, shown above, tells me that there is a Burberry-like quality to the collection, but aside from the interesting trench, I can’t tell a whole lot. The astute readers out there are normally quick to give a blog writer with her nose embedded in a closet, some insight as to who or what 365 may be. If you know and are willing to tell me, before I go to this event, don’t hesitate, play the role of spoiler now.

First it was the t-shirts, then it was the skirts she’d wear all the while talking about all types of high-end designers. So I’m imploring her to talk about her love of Urban Outfitters. There’s nothing wrong with sharing it with friends. Especially if you’re looking for the latest and greatest from their Fall stuff. Maybe that’s the problem with fashion blogging. The latest and greatest always means something that comes from Paris, Milan and not your around the corner store here in the states. The fetish ranges from the various trenches that some of us love to wear, to the constant accessories that show up around this time of fall. This time though there are actual pieces from the fall collections that are becoming favorites in our designer playlist (by the way, I’m putting a designer playlist on Papierblog together for the fall). Being added to said playlist is this skirt from Burberry. It’s high-waisted, frilly (without being annoyingly girly and can go with a couple of things in the closet. I say a couple, because honestly this skirt is too unique to have a go with everything vibe.
It happens all the time. You look at a pair of shoes and wonder what to make of them. Are they something you would want to wear? Do they really fit your conventions of being stylish? Which leads to the questions of Giuseppe Zanotti’s Studded Buckle Boots. Many will get images of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and “Bad” era. But in all honesty these boots are in the Sid and Nancy vein. Cintra Wilson of The New York Times has an article today on the everlasting endurance of Goth as a fashion trend and these boots seem to validate her point. Which leads back to the nagging question: will these boots be the start of a newer trend of studded boots in a variety of colors, costing upwards of $800? Zanotti may have already answered that question. View them here.

So it’s good to know that several fashion designers feel exactly how we (most of the editors) feel. To that end, the Barack Obama store has several t-shirt, handbag and bracelets from America’s top designers on sale. Proceeds are going to help fight the Republican war machine via Barack Obama’s campaign. One of the most tiring things for a writer and a photographer is to go to see a series of collections back to back and watch the same basic trends in collections. Ports 1961 was anything but the same old same old. This collection comes highly recommended for the Fall season. The most specific example of what you’ll want from the collection is this interesting take on a trench/dress. Scrumptious:

It wasn’t enough that she showcased a beautiful collection during New York fashion week. Vivienne Tam also put together a fashionable clutch laptop or laptop clutch (depending on how you see it) with the technical help of HP. So there’s not a whole lot that we know about the clutch other than the fact that Tam’s love of peony flower design design comes through and the screen fills up the second half of the clutch. With designs like this you would swear that Apple had a hand in creating it, but realistically it’s all Tam all the time. via: Engadget

All is not fair in politics and fashion. Will it be a walk off in November between Michelle and Cindy? Although politically speaking I am not a fan of McCain’s views- I must say his wife has an eye for fashion. Monday’s mustard Oscar de la Renta number and Tuesday’s orangey number brought style and color to the Republican convention; ( just need to loosen that tight ponytail Cindy) proving that style is not lost on either potential leading lady. However which candidate will allow the rest of us to free up some savings for the rest of us to be so stylish- just saying….

I don’t know if it’s a left brain, right brain thing but I’ve always been one for symmetry. What that essentially means is that for fashion sake I really like having it where whatever if something is done on one side, it also has be done on the other and in equal proportion. There are no ifs ands or buts about it with me. Which leads to the point of this post, yesterday I ended up with something in my e-mail that may start changing that point of view. Nash Hoop earrings takes everything about symmetry in jewelry (you know having matching earrings, bracelets etcs) and throws it out the window. While not exactly a new thing in fashion, this is just done so well it seems as if it’s a first time thing. The earrings are sterling silver pieces, hand oxidized to create a vintage look. Although the earrings come as pairs, the designer encourage a whole mix and match vibe. Fashion industry stalwarts designers Nina Segal and Ashleigh Cohen are the creative geniuses behind the line and it’s obvious they know exactly what they’re doing. I wish they were online for purchase, currently they’re available in these select [...]

Stacy Bendet designer and owner of the rising brand put these sketches together and it gives us a glimpse as to what to expect for fashion week. The collection looks very flirty and fun with the big bows, the flared out skirts and the crop shirts are the stuff of a whimsical genius. Bendet says that “The vibe for our spring collection has an organic 70′s hippie feel while being feminine and sophisticated at the same time.” Visit her site online at www.aliceandolivia.com/

like talking about items that are in stores now because, hello, you can actually buy them. So it comes as no surprise that these pumps are one of my top picks for the Fall season. You’ve seen various permutations of the tassle, the block heel and the round toe. It’s not as if DG is setting some sort of new standard or are wowing everyone to death, but there’s something to be said about refined simplicity. Being timeless is more so important than just creating a trend (but as a reader, you know that already). So why am I selecting these heels? As a In Stores Now pickup? Because they are timeless and are tops for the fall. Get a closer look here.

NJ blog…yup, a blog about New Jersey posted an article blog yesterday scooping the fashion world on what to expect from Rebecca Taylor at the upcoming fashion week. Lisa Irizarry of The Star Ledger says that Rebecca Taylor will be going boho for this fashion week. From the sketches, I am seeing less Boho and more bubblegum, though some of the two tops I saw there is a gypsy-ish quality. It was a fashion trend that didn’t want to go away a couple of seasons ago and still is breathing a renewed air today. Click this link for her post.

Let’s just jump right in. About a year ago designer Anya Hindmarch came up with the I’m Not a Plastic Bag fashion accessory and it sold in ridiculous amounts. The jury was out on whether it was actually selling because people liked the concept or because an Anya Hindmarch bag was selling for $15. The concept was simple: instead of harming the environment and dolphins with bags that eventually make their way out to sea and never biodegrade, have the fashion public re-use their bags. It was genius in the making until someone started making fun of the whole pretentious aspect of the I’m not a Plastic Bag craze. Fast forward a year and someone has come up with something arguably more green on the green scale of environmentally green. Joe Hyneck, a PhD student of mechanical engineering at Iowa State Univeristy has created a solar handbag that charges cell phones and iPods. Here’s the Papierblog non-scientific version of how the bag works: apparently Hyneck to thin-film solar photovoltaic cells and embedded them into the fabric of the handbag. When exposed to the sun, items within the bag start charging. The efficiency in charging probably won’t match just plugging the cell [...]

The parent company is quickly running out of cash. They say all of these things and some wonder if even mentioning Bill Blass is worth it. Personally, Bill Blass is one collection I look forward to seeing. The crowds have dwindled over the years for flashier spectacles and designers that are synonymous with major buzzwords, but when you have a favorite, nothing else matters and the big picture is that I am rooting for Bill Blass..especially with these flashes of brilliance: photo: Kevin Kane for Papierdoll

The pundits will say we’re in the can for Barack Obama and his wife. We’ve done several blog posts on the duo and none on Cindy McCain. The simple fact of the matter is, Michelle Obama’s put on quite an impressive fashion show since sauntering into the public eye via her husband’s presidential bid. Indeed, the articles that point out how her wearing a purple dress, or the black and white dress increase sales for those lines are indicative of what an Obama presidency might do for the fashion industry. That being said, it would make a whole lot of sense if we had a key into where Michelle Obama shops. It only makes sense right? The Susan Saulny of the New York Times today looks at just that today with her An Obama Fashion Bump article. Where does she shop? Designer Maria Pinto knows and has a hand in Michelle Obama’s shopping. She’s one of the Obama’s favorite designers. Pinto recalls Michelle Obama’s first meeting where Obama walked in and said “I need a few dresses. I need a suit for work”. Now Pinto’s collection is in stores like Saks and Barney’s in addition to her own boutique in [...]

This bag… This bag is a favorite making the rounds at Papierdoll. It’s is authentic Louis Vuitton and the reason it’s getting so many accolades here at PD is simply because it’s constructed with a classic style that you’ll find only in an Audrey Hepburn movie. We’re getting Vertigo just thinking about it. As an aside when we found this bag, we noticed the retailer went to great pains to ensure that this was an Authentic Louis Vuitton bag. It was a reputable retailer so there was no doubt that the bag was indeed a Louis Vuitton original, which led me to believe that the counterfeit problem is getting really bad… There was no mistaking the fact that Louis Vuitton is possibly the most copyright infringed fashion brand in the world. A simple stroll down Canal Street in Manhattan will get you to that conclusion fast. The interesting thing though is how legitimate internet stores are bending over backwards to make sure that you know they only sell authentic Louis Vuitton. We can’t take it on face value that Eluxury for example is selling authentic Louis Vuitton. It’s come to a point where even the Louis Vuitton site has to [...]
